    Hi all,
We plan to contact a local trainer at the end of January but were looking to try any advice in the mean time,
We have a seven month old beagle hes with my wife and our three children all of the time,
His main owner is my wife

Anytime were walking him he gets really nervous when meeting other dogs he yelps and jumps up on my wife as though for her to pick him up away from the approaching beast lol regardless of there breed big or tiny hes equally afraid or insecure.

We have had him since he was eight weeks old, he really is a big softie now 21.2kg
His dads a pedigree Bearnese and his mam is a pedigree beagle
We comfort him while other dogs pass but he still barks st them and jumps yelling as though he is injured

    Any advice greatly appreciated thanks

    He's really gorgeous op :)
Ok... until you get the trainer out, you need to try to stop this getting any worse. This will mean trying to avoid areas where he has to meet other dogs up close... that means avoiding footpath and park walking... Woodlands and beaches tend to work well as you can see dogs coming from a long way off and take evasive action, with places to "hide". Try to pre-empt the appearance of other dogs before he spots them, and use treats, or toys, and a happy, chirpy voice, to change direction or find a hiding place.
Have you chosen your trainer? If not, let us know roughly where you are so we can hopefully recommend someone who's appropriately qualified and professionally certified.

Edited to add, to save repetition... here's a thread posted by Bananaleaf a few months ago whose dog was having similar problems, although it sounds like your lad is already seeking comfort by turning to your OH, which could possibly be capitalised on in my first post in this linked thread... https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=110930817

    He’s a beauty OP

    A few questions..

What have you guys done to socialise him properly? Around other dogs? Other situations?

Puppy training classes / socialisation classes?

He’s a cross breed you mention his parents ... where did you get him op? Did you see where he was kept?

He sounds very nervous and unsure all can be addressed but u need to act fast on this .. otherwise he ‘may’ start negative behaviors etc

Hi OP, your dog is lovely! It would be better to get a trainer now as opposed to waiting until the end of January. Could you even go to training classes as long as he’s not too nervous?

Was he socialised well when you got him and where did you get him from? Puppies ideally should be well socialised prior to 16 weeks and then continuing up to 6 months and onwards.

It would better to get a trainers advise sooner rather than later so you can begin working on building his confidence now as opposed to waiting another 4 weeks. A trainer will help you with building his confidence now and advise you on how to manage him being around or near other dogs and what is appropriate for him or not at this stage

+1 on previous posts, also if there's a certain distance beyond which he's OK with other dogs maybe get him out and about maintaining that range from other dogs.
My dog used to get amped up around people so I used to sit on a bench or wall that was well out of the way and over time she realised there wasn't anything to be getting excited over.
Now she's walks down busy streets happy as Larry!
