    Hi

A couple of warning lights came on in my car this evening while driving.

    1. Engine light
    2. EPC light
    3. Symbol of car with skidmarks.

Can someone advise me how serious these lights are? I only got the car serviced about a month ago.

The 3 lights are probably all related to one fault.

No way of knowing how serious it is without plugging it in and finding out what the craic is.

    Diagnostics?

Agreed, all lights are most likely related. Could literally be anything wouldn't be too concerned just yet. The TSI engines are prone to a few different issues but most are well known and easy to sort.

Can't afford a new car atm

Don’t panic at this stage, it could be something silly.

    It happened before

    What happened last time?

The issue with the lights showing up, and the car losing power

Got the car looked at this morning. Got a temporary job done on it. The following needs to be replaced on the car:

    Coil pack
    Ignition lead
    Spark plugs.

Some dipso put a wrong part on it last time it was serviced.

I don't have the money to fix it atm. If I was to get all that done, it would cost over 500

Sounds like a main dealer quote. Probably get it a little cheaper independently. Good shout to do them all at once though.

Yeah I went to a main dealership in Naas. Just can't afford it atm

Go to an independent garage and get a fresh diagnosis. Try Pat Fahey Motors up near the racecourse

I sounds like it may be a faulty wheel speed sensor. this can throw those lights i have seen it before.

I've actually just thought of a place in Newbridge that I went to before, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of it?

If the car needed plugs, why didn’t they pick it up on the last main dealer service?

Is it possible that it needs a coil and it’s then standard practice to sell 4 coils and then also sell leads and plugs when this happens? Maybe TFB can advise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

They actually use a more traditional coil pack and a set of individual leads going to the plugs. I think they had an issue with moisture ingress or condensation at the coil pack and you'd get corrosion where the leads connect to the coil, main dealer answer is a new coil pack and plug leads, probably dont really need the plugs but hey, ho when you're already doing the expensive bits.

You could try cleaning the coil pack and lead terminals, or try a new coil pack and clean the leads but either way, success is patchy. Safest route genuinely is replace coil pack, leads and plugs.

Main dealer parts for this particular repair are saucey though, think the coil is like €180 and another €100 or so for the leads. Could definitely do better independently in this case.

I think the OPs car is a TSI, does this make any difference?

    €500 seems an astronomical amount.

Yeah it is a TSI. 500 is what a VW dealer in Naas quoted to me.

Yeah, it is reassuringly expensive, they aren't fleecing him though as main dealers go it's about the going rate. The 1.2 TSi (CBZ I think?) engine in the Mk6 uses a coil pack with leads.

The newer 1.2 TSi uses pencil coils and they were **** too. The coil would break in half when removing them to change the plugs.

CBZ? What does this mean?? My TSI uses a coil pack with leads.

    Is yours 1.2 or 1.4 ?

CBZ is an engine identifier code

No one ask if the car is driving crappy if so dont keep on driving it .

It was. As I said earlier in the thread(I think?), it was struggling to go up in gears, and would barely make it to 60kmh.

As a person with a disability, I rely on my car for independence

So car maybe running on 2 cyls and pumping petrol into the dead cylinder which will lead to oil removal and cyl damage and issue with rings. I do hope its not a valve issue.

What if it IS a valve issue?

Very expensive as its a cylinder head off job and possibly timing chain.
Early vws had valve guide issues and heads off at 18th miles.
First thing to check is it getting a spark to all cylinders, hence why diagnostics need to be run to see which cylinder is at gone faulty.

They ran a diagnostic check and quoted me over 500 quid to get it fixed. Money which I don't have atm.

As I said in the thread earlier - it needs new spark plugs, a coil pack, and an ignition lead.

I would imagine non vw parts would be cheaper from motor factors and any local garage near you?

Those 3 items are surprisingly easy to do yourself.

    Fair enough.

Your best bet so , is to find a local independent mechanic.
Give then the details you got from the main dealer.

Those 3 can items (if all 3 are actually needed) shouldn't cost too much.

If the cars running rough, it might just be a coil pack.

It's ok now, but it will eventually happen again
