    Hey there,

I am looking for my first car and have a budget around 10k.

Any suggestions for a automatic around 10 years old or newer that I should be looking for?

Small as it would be a first car and use to driving hatchbacks.

You'll get a newer than 10 year old car in automatic for 10k. The most expensive are Merc BMW and Audi and you could even go as far as a 2011 5 series, e class or a6 for 10k.

Smaller cars like you're looking for I'd say look in the 2014 bracket

I'd suggest an Audi a3 saloon or hatch, I think the saloon is a stunner. Or maybe a golf.

Small automatic cars are still rare here and tend to command decent money. Most of them are either those terrible automated manuals like Toyota's multi mode or CVT. Due to their scarcity here there are also of used Japanese imports which can be hard or more expensive to insure.

Not total, are you doing constant long distances or loads of short distances?

A few have recommended cars here with DSG gearboxes. Some of those were problematic. Did they ever get on top of the reliability?

I don’t think DSG was ever unreliable. It was just people who never done the essential gearbox oil change that gave them a bad rep. A lot of people didn’t even know it had oil.

    Around 450km a week.

I think what he is asking is, does your 450km a week include like 4 or 5 100km motorway commutes, or is it more like 50 10km commutes around town.. Basically does your yearly mileage consist of several short journeys? Or a long motorway commute just a few times a week? Or a mixture of both

Exactly, then hybrid, diesel etc would be a better choice

No point buying a hybrid if you spend each day doing long motorway drives as diesel is best....if your unsure of car then pick the best fuel and then find the car.....

We had a 116d replaced by a 420d. Wife misses the 116d and would have it over the 4. My mother had a auto 116d too and upgraded to a new one this year, she is very happy with it. All autos.

In fact this is my mother's old car.

How are these with the timing chain issue?

We had two 1ers at the same time, a 131 X3, an 08 320d and a 2012 X1 all with 2.0l engines in the past decade and now the 4 and none gave any issues. All maintained by BMW according to their service schedules. The 320d is still around Limerick with close to 200k miles and is still on the original chain.

It's only the 6 speed that needed the oil change, the 7 speed uses dry clutches and a small amount of oil for the control unit and solenoids, they were recalled to change this oil to mineral oil as synthetic oil was used originally.
