Just looking at booking with Irish Ferries for July 2020 Rosslare to Pembroke. They have now added a 4 euro environmental charge and 5 euro administration fee to each person for each leg of the journey. So that's an extra 80 quid for us this year!!!
    Has anyone.heard about this? Cheers

Yup, all in their FAQ section of their website. I made a booking for next Summer and had checked out the FAQ for the booking fees etc.

    From the IF website

    https://www.irishferries.com/ie-en/frequently-asked-questions/

    Administrative dues & service fees:

Administrative dues are per booking and are applied on an each way basis as follows:

Ireland – Britain routes (motorist booking):

    Adult €5.00 / £4.00
    Child (4-15 years) €2.50 / £2.00
Ireland – Britain routes (foot / cyclist / motorcycle booking):

    Adult €2.00 / £1.50
    Child (4-15 years) €1.00 / £0.75
    Service Fee

Bookings made by telephone or in person at our ports and offices will include a service fee per booking of €15 / £10 for motorist or holiday bookings or €5 / £4 for foot / cyclist or motorcycle bookings. NOTE: Charges, administrative fees & dues are fixed amounts and are excluded from discounts and promotional offers

    What is the Environmental charge?

In line with the ambition to make the shipping industry more environmentally friendly and to reduce harmful air emissions, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO - the regulatory authority for international shipping) has set 1 January 2020 as the implementation date for the EU Directive EU 2016/802, for a significant reduction in the sulphur content of the fuel oil used by ships. The new cap of 0.5% sulphur in the fuel or equivalent solutions will mean a higher cost of compliance for all ferry operators from 1 January 2020. The reductions in sulphur oxides emissions resulting from the lower global sulphur limit are expected to have a significant beneficial impact on the environment and human health.

Irish Ferries have introduced an Environmental charge that contributes to the cost of compliance to meet the 2020 sulphur directive. The fee is a fixed amount as follows (each way):

Ireland – France route (all bookings):

    Adult €6.00
    Child (4-15 years) €3.00
    Irish Sea routes (motorist booking):

    Adult €4.00 / £4.00
    Child (4-15 years) €2.00 / £2.00
Irish Sea routes (foot / cyclist / motorcycle booking):

    Adult €1.50 / £1.50
    Child (4-15 years) €1.50 / £1.50
NOTE: Charges, administrative fees & dues are fixed amounts and are excluded from discounts and promotional offers.

'significant beneficial impact' Even Mick O'Leary doesn't talk that kind of sh1te.

The way Irish Ferries worded that statement, you'd think you were making a positive contribution to the environment every time you travelled with them.

I sometimes go over to Wales for the day /night. For 2 of of us i’m getting 80-120 return extra! They have just lost a loyal customer.

Gretta wants you not to encourage needless travel such as this , so its for the best.

Seeing that you mentioned Greta, Greta won’t be discouraging any travel for me at all( i’ll be using Stena for a while).

Didn't the airlines get hauled over the coals for this kind of non-optional, per-passenger, per-sector charge? Why should a ferry company be treated any differently? I was considering taking the car to Ireland this year (from France) but if Irish Ferries are starting this kind of scammy behaviour, I'll stick with Ryanair and pay to check in a case instead.

I thought this country recently outlawed admin charges?

    Ha! :pac:
ALL taxes and port charges included!
in bold, at the bottom of the running total.

Thought I'd do a dummy booking for my dates, to see how up-front they were with these charges.
First screen (vehicle): headline fare is big and bold, two non-optional charges are hidden.
    - "Outward price" is the vehicle fare as displayed in the selection box; ditto for "Return"
    - TOTAL is an unambiguous figure adding the displayed price for out and return legs.

Second screen (accommodation): headline fare still big and bold, accommodation charge is smaller, but clearly listed as an extra, two non-optional charges are still hidden.
    - "Outward price" is a the sum of vehicle fare and accommodation; ditto for "Return"
    - TOTAL is an unambiguous fare adding the displayed price for out and return legs, now including accommodation.

Third screen (optional extras): pick none and ... now they un-hide the two extra non-optional charges and bump up the TOTAL - still proudly bragging ALL taxes and port charges included!

Will need to find the relevant text, but I'm pretty sure this is not allowed under EU rules.

If i book the way i normally do return next day they apply a 25% discount.

I can't understand the need for such a high charge, the Isle Of Inishmore does Rosslare to Fishguard on 50 tonnes of fuel for the round trip. The proposed levy on heavy fuel oil is $2 a tonne to clean the industry up. Understandably there will be some initial costs converting filtration but these costs will be for the majority one offs and not ongoing.

No company cares about the environment. They think people do so they label the extra charges that way

It’s an additional cost to you. Whatever label they give it doesn’t matter

I saw these charges today I was looking to book Dub/France in March (Had to change it to April as that awful Epsilon is still operating the route) was very surprised to see an extra 44 Euro for two with these charges - Irish Ferries can feck off now the service has dropped in the last year with boarding delays at the port and a disappointing new ferry - I think they are trying to cover losses. Well they're losing my custom.
