It is a 151 Hyundai IX35. She was driving along and it suddenly cut out with the engine malfunction and battery light flashing. She turned the car off and than started it again and it happened a few more times. What could be wrong?

Could be 100 things, but most likely simply a battery problem.

I would expect more than five years from a battery, but it depends on driving habits.

And isn't it covered under warranty still at that age?

    Is Hyundai not 7 years?

    A battery isn't a warranty item.

There is no requirement I know of to give a warranty on a car that is outside of manufacture warranty. Many garages will give you would as that is the only incentive you would have for paying out more than a private sale. It's best to haggle to try to get the best warranty you can in writing.
Covering parts but not labour is something that is common as a basic warranty on a used car but they will offer more if they really want to make the sale.

Would they be looking for main dealer service stamps or what's the story there?

You won't know this until you at least get the fault codes read.

Take it to a Hyundai specialist (if you can find one) or dealer to have the codes read.
There will be a cost for that.

Hopefully its nothing too serious and just something simple. Just her luck do that it happened now when she had loads of trips to visit cousins planned. Be a week before the local garage where she bought it opens again.

She bought it off a local Kia main dealer so thats where she is going to bring it back to. Just unfortunate that it happened now as the dealer is not open for another week.
