Minor Upgrade from L24

Can't find a similar thread and looking for some ideas. We have a Leaf (151 Teckna) since mid-2017 and absolutely love it. Top spec and only 50K km on it to date. 3 young kids so unfortunately we can't all travel in it together, but it's perfect as a second car.

However, I occasionally us it for airport runs when travelling and I find in very cold weather esp if I pre-heat the car that I'm borderline on range for the return trip, and couldn't be bothered sorting airport charging. Well to call a spade a spade I'd also love a change without spending a heap.

Any suggestions on an upgrade BEV that won't break the bank? I reckon current car might be worth € 12-13K (?). Would investing 5K ish get me anything interesting?

    WANT
Longer range (realistic 160-200 km would be nice)
    High spec (I like gadgets)
    Leather seats (kids)
Compatible with existing home charger (assume anything will be)

    WOULD LOVE
Android Auto (although dunno if any normal cars include that?)
A Tesla :) - realise not gonna happen
Something slightly wider in the back. Maybe if I got a narrow booster for 8 year old it might squeeze in the middle of the other two.

Probably not worth your estimate with a 24KwH battery and type 1 charger, maybe 11k. could look to 181 leaf40 or 172 ioniq near budget, 22-26k, or go smaller to Zoe. After that mostly new cars like ecorsa and e208 next year.

Prices are dropping at moment due to arrival of competition at low to midlevel market so I'd wait till mid-jan.

It's a good idea to dispose of the L24 before everyone realises that paid charging has made them virtually obsolete for any kind of a journey outside their range.
When you look at the time required to charge and the cost, you would be better off with a diesel.
Not sure that your price range is sufficient to get a worthwhile upgrade.

Utter nonsense. A L24 is fine for journeys outside the range. Particularly now there is paid charging so you actually get a much better chance to fast charge without having to queue.

A L24 that does 90% of charging at home at the night rate and 10% on the paid public fast charging network, only costs a fraction in fuel compared to a diesel car

I'd say l30 is best bet for a little extra range and in budget. I don't think ioniwq or l40 are in budget??

So those two options are € 22K plus? Meaning I'd need to put in € 10K+, right?

Completely disagree. Keep in mind this is a second car. Neither of our commutes is more than 40km each way, all family live closer than that and Dublin is 20km. Outside of my work charging (which I only use out of convenience if I ever drive in) I could count on two hands the amount of times I've used a public charger, and most of that was using local chargers before I got our home one installed. To me the car still has huge usage value to the right types of user.

Agreed, and for me the 90% is a lot closer to 100%!

Yeah had a feeling L40 might be stretching it and was hoping there was another option I hadn't considered. What about eGolf, would range be decent on one of those a few years old?

Doesn't sound like any upgrade you're going to want would be worth it for the money needed to upgrade. 10k maybe for a bit more range when all but 100% of your driving is already within range.

What! Everyone has so many charging and usage scenarios that comment is nonsense

Others have already said it, but as the owner of two L24s, I’m actually much more likely to consider a long journey now that I know fast chargers are much more likely to be available. Have used the network more in the last month or two than I did for the rest of the year!

I’m in the same position as OP though, keeping my eyes peeled for 181 L40s dropping in price!

Saw a 2015 leaf stranded 5km from Cashel FCP this afternoon. Tricky in an L24! Probably lots of two car household EV drivers soon ready to move to having 1 longer range EV but price not yet right for many.

    Most is within range, but:
    1) I get a bit of range anxiety on the airport run esp if cold + wet + I drive fast enough and I guess once I start dropping bars it might get worse
    2) I'd like a change too

Ok so I guess L40 is one to keep an eye on then. Do they come with more gadgets than L24? Android Auto etc? Same app isn't it anyway?

Right now we're a 5008 and a L24. Until there's a people carrier EV with reasonable capacity and possibly even the handy third row (plus affordable!) I suspect we'll still have the 5008. But as the kids get older and we move from 3 bulky seats to a more narrow collection maybe the EV could do the whole family for some journeys I hope.
