Seems to be a few threads on consumerism , but was looking up a car there , Audi etron (100K).

I know it is all relative, but I couldn't justify ever spending over 20 K for a car.

A few other things , mobile phones, what is 1K for a mobile phone all about.

    then smaller stuff
    Coffee
Drinks in pubs (G&T and draft fad)
    Fashion

Is there any stuff you think is crazy .

Are we entering an era of anti consumerism or I'm I just getting miserable in my mid age.

    A watch for 70 grand....and more.

Hotels. Crazy money especially when sometimes you only sleep there for a few hours and don't avail of the facilities and then they charge you extra to park there.

    Golf membership...crazy money...nuts.

A colleague in work was running up to town today to "get the last bits and pieces for her kids" anyway, we were having small talk and she told me that while chatting to her husband that morning they both agreed they had enough bought for the two kids (early teens). She then admitted they had spent just over a grand on them this Christmas! That's over €500 each, I nearly fell of the seat, is this normal?

Mobile phones. People spending upwards of a grand on something that a phone worth a hundred can do 90% of.

    Human's eh.

Why the obsession with what someone spends their money on? Should we all wear rags, scavenge for reduced food and leave it all in a bank account for revenue to get their slice?

Life is short, enjoy it when you can.

Houses - the big one here..

accessories for houses. When there is a tiger roaring the prices go mad. 100s for a simple kitchen tap, towel radiator. thousands for a bloody worktop and one of those new sinks that's impossible to keep clean. Then 25k to have '''the latest and greatest'' heating system inside in a very well insulated house that doesn't need much heating at all

    You must be loaded.

    But its still smelly water.

Do you own your own home or buy Coffee :P

In fairness , the I can't exist without my coffee in the morning from "costa" or whatever , is a bit pathetic.

We just start making it at home before we left. We were on a tight budget for a year and you can save at least 40 quid a week doing this (a couple).

By the way i'm the least bit frugal.

But we all know there are certain purchases that are just daft. They can be anything from a 2 euro bottle of coke to a 700K house just because it is - D3, D4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,291 ✭✭✭-=al=-

Good coffee is worth it, but cheap coffee at not cheep coffee prices is where it gets grim.

Insisting on a brand new phone and car every year when the previous one is fine probably isn't great. Other than that, fast fashion is pretty bad.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em, I guess... but try and be at least a little but conscious of the impact you're having

I'm not going to be lectured by someone who sinks five pints at the weekend, that somehow the coffee I get on occasion is the greatest sin of consumerism.

    I agree.

Buying dozens of handbags & fifty pairs of shoes is a laughable investment.

They're not an investment though, just pretty things to be enjoyed.

It comes down to what you value really. Mindless consumerism, spending money for the sake of it is hard to defend. But spending money (and yes daft silly amounts) on something that brings you joy, maybe for years to come isn’t such a bad thing in my book. I’ve never got the whole “you should spend money on experiences not things” mantra. Saving your hard earned money for a new jacket you have had your eye on for a while or a particular type of car you have dreamt of owning or a comic book, isn’t vacuous or shallow. If you can afford it and get something from it, why not? I’ve spent stupid money on stuff for my house which I’m sure some people would scratch their head over but it makes me happy. And it’s not as if I’m out buying a new couch every year! Each to their own.
