    Hi

setting up the front room and will be buying a TV in new year.
All we would want is basic irish and english tv channels, but we dont have a satellite dish or aerial on roof.
We do have gigabit broadband though hardwired to the room.

What is best for my needs? I have a ZGemma box from the previous house which worked with the satellite but is this useless now ?

Would an internal aerial work to get the basic channels?

Would you consider looking into IPTV?

It's the way things are going and with such high speed internet, you should have a great quality of service.

    Hi

Have had mixed experiences in the past where subs would dissapear.
Is there a basic IPTV one can purchase ? Would the ZGEMMA box still be useful ?

On topic - an internal aerial will pick up Irish channels, if you are close to the transmitter (I am ~6km from Spur Hill in Cork, I use a cheap one for all internal aerial and it works fine). You will not be able to pick up UK channels on an internal aerial, and you would need either a roof aerial (if close to border/east coast) to pick up Freeview or a satellite dish to pick up freesat.

    Yes

Based in midlands so that rules out any UK channels.

PM me if you have any 'alternative' solutions.

Who said anything about breaking the law? There's plenty of legit providers and the Irish channels can be got through RTÉ Player legally on the same TV.

The days of the satellite dish are numbered. Sky are already trialling IPTV Sky boxes with staff and will be off the Astra dishes in the near future. That's the entire Sky EPG without a Sky dish, not a limited service.

Why beam a picture into space in order to share it back to Earth, when you have a direct line to almost everyone thanks to the boom in broadband provision.

OP, if you have a smart TV, download the RTÉ Player, All4 and Virgin Media Player.

NowTV is an IPTV service provided by Sky and it's reasonably priced, but if you're not going to get the use out of it, stick to the free on demand services mentioned above.

The RTE player is not great for many trying to use at the moment..I have read about it here and on other forums..I find it plays the adverts, and after that it is hit and miss.I would be interested to hear more about the sat dish days being over.
    Thanks

Nothing really without an aerial and satellite connection. Also, should be noted that not all zgemma boxes have terrestrial tuner, so might just be satellite.
