Any online ratings are untrustworthy, a good solicitor not getting a next to impossible result for someone could get a negative review for instance

Yes without knowing the details I would agree but with any online reviews when you see a lot of negative reviews it would be safer to steer clear

A personal recommendation from someone with sound judgement is helpful where that person has had good experience of a particular solicitor.
That said, personal recommendations are not warranties especially if the subject matter of your issue is different from that of the person making a recommendation.

You could always look at this thread from www.askaboutmoney.com where people do post recommendations.
However, such recommendations must also carry a health warning.

The Law Society runs a feature on their site about finding a solicitor.

You will see that they publish details of disciplinary proceedings against identified solicitors so that might be a useful "negative search" in the paradoxical sense of that phrase i.e. one to avoid.

Also, note that they have a Negligence Panel of solicitors who have indicated a preparedness to take instructions in professional negligence matters against other lawyers but even that list comes with caveats.

Before you settle on a solicitor to instruct you need to do a bit of due diligence. Be sure to get a Section 68 letter where you ask for a written summary of the likely work required and ask for an estimate of the possible costs involved. This is why you should shop around and get quotes from a few before proceeding.

The Best Way to find a solicitor is by a personal recommendation from a person who knows you and knows the solicitor. This is really the only way to do it if you need a solicitor to do something complex and you need better than average talent.

The best solicitors in the city are hated and reviled unfortunately, sometimes by their opponents but sometimes by their own clients too. Being a great solicitor is intellectually and emotionally demanding but it is definitely not a popularity contest. You will not get much of a steer on solicitors from rating sites.

The problem is that solicitors role is in the centre of a world of conflicts and disputes. The parties inevitably project their negative emotions onto the solicitors. This is at its most acute in family law, I suppose, but the same sort of thing goes on in other areas of the law too.

If things are really so bad that you don’t know anybody the only thing I can suggest is to read as widely as possible online and perhaps in the legal press and try to find a solicitor who seems to know a lot about your specific topic.

Don’t be thinking solicitors will necessarily take on your business. They may be too busy already (this is a common and often fair complaint about solicitors). They have to watch out for tyre kickers. Solicitors who have a reputation dealing with liquor licences for instance, aren’t going to take a cold call from a person with a plan to open a pub. There just isn’t much chance of the meeting turning into significant paying work.
