Connecting older equipment to Smart TV

Bought a smart TV today without checking if it had suitable connector slots for Free to air Sky box (scart) and the Equicom analogue Calving camera (RS232).
Checking online I see an adapter for converting Scart to HDMI. Which adapter would I need to convert the RS232, and should it to USB or HDMI. Anyone ever done this, and if so did it work out OK.

Needless to say the TV is out of the box, I tuned it up to Saorview before realising I had a problem.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thanks for the reply Sugarman and identifying the VGA connector.
The Equipcom camera was serviced and repaired earlier this year, so it needs to earn its keep a while longer. The equipment cost around 1K a few years ago, it's pretty good, camera can be swiveled around and lens zoom in, which is essential at calving time.

As for the Sky box, would the one on Adverts be "free view" enabled ( or is that being too pushy). No-one is tech savvy here.

    Thanks again

And there definitely isn’t a satellite tuner built into the tv?

Thanks Colm_Mcm. Not a clue, smart tv, dumb operator. I'm definitely feeling my age now, as they would say at work, use the rtfm method.

I'll check it out tomorrow. Thanks again.

There would be a threaded connector on the back of the tv if there was

It'll work with the FTA channels. Depending on whether it was an Irish or UK box, you'll either get BBC 1/BBC2 at 101/102 or up higher. There'll be loads of gaps though of channels you can't watch, and Irish channels don't broadcast FTA over satellite.

You mentioned you are getting saorview already, so a suggestion would be to buy a cheap Freesat branded box (e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-SX-Freesat-HD-Box/dp/B07CD8GHFF/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=manhatten+freesat&qid=1576152637&sr=8-1) that would give you the UK FTA channels in a nice EPG with 7 day TV guide. No recording, but you won't get that from the Sky box either without a sub.

Regarding your TV - what brand is it? If it's a new LG you'll have Freesat built into it, lots of other brands have FTA satellite (without the Freesat connectivity), keep an eye out for a connector on back of TV that looks like you need to screw cable in to secure it...

you can buy a scart to phono cable, the green/yellow socket on the rear of your tv will accept composite video in from any scart device
plug the yellow plug on the scart to phono lead into the green/yellow socket and the red and white audio to the corresponding re and white audio inputs
i would have thought an rs232 is a very unusual socket for a camera picture output as this is normally used to control the pan/tilt/zoom functions of a camera
do you have a dvr controller in your house that connects to the camera
this may have a vga or hdmi output for connecting a tv/monitor.

Thanks pegasuspub, and other posters who took the time to reply.

I had a read of the user manual yesterday, so know that it does not have the threaded connector.

Looks like the way to go is scart adapter to hdmi for the sky box, and scart to phono or VGA to HDMI options for the camera.

The camera is operated from the dwelling house, AV on TV, mouse operated.
I will give the person who serviced the camera earlier this year a call over the weekend.

Naming the VGA as an rs232 was my mistake.

Thanks everybody for advice, gratefully received.

Update – TV up and running – very good help on this forum.

Lo and behold the camera controller is a HD Digital Video Recorder and came supplied with its own HDMI connection and cable. I was obviously looking at that with eyes wide shut.

I purchased the Scart to phono cable, and discovered I had two of these already, in a drawer full of old tangled cables. (I wouldn’t have known which or whether beforehand).

I looked up the Freesat on Amazon, and baulked at seeing the suggested additional items, and wondered if connecting that up would be beyond my capabilities.

    Buy the selected items together
    •This item:Manhattan SX Freesat HD Box £48.99

    • CSL sat-finder satellite finder with level display - pointer display measuring device with signal… £9.09

•Visiblewave 4K Quad LNB 4 Output HD for SKY HD / Freesat HD with Bracket £13.69

If there was a sky box there previously, then you simply need to unscrew the connector from the sky box and screw it into the Manhattan box. Plug the Manhattan box into electricity and HDMI cable into TV and you're done. Simples. No need for the other items unless you need a new LNB on the dish and want to align it.

Thanks again Dulpit. That is good to know that the Manhattan box can easily replace the existing sky one.

How difficult is it add Freesat to bedroom TV, is it a matter of adding a 2 way aerial splitter connection at the dish and running a sky aerial cable down to a Manhattan box and a Panasonic TV (bought 2012) which has 2 x hdmi, and scart connections. I am just being curious about it more than anything else.

You can probably run multiple cables from the satellite dish, if it was installed for sky plus it'll have a 4 way lnb on it, so you can run 4 cables from it to wherever you want in house. I don't think you can split a satellite cable, but others more technically minded here can provide opinions here.
