Whats happening at Maam Cross?

Have passed through the cross a bit in the last fortnight, activity seems to be racing along to set up some sort of site with metal containers and all sorts of machinery. Ive heard rumour that its fracking that is intended to take place and they quarry down the road seems to have shot into activity also.

Surprised there is so little mentioned about it and that if it is fracking with all its negative publicity there arent any concerns being raised.

Have I heard right as to the activity there?

Nearly sure fracking is not legal here.

I was wondering this too actually - seems to be progressing quickly day and night whatever it might be.

EDIT: Scratch that - looks like the road is being upgraded starting in the new year and they're likely using that space to set up for it:

https://connachttribune.ie/contract-signed-for-works-on-n59-east-of-maam-cross/ - matches the description with Clare Civil mentioned, who are the crowd setting up there according to the signage.

Must be why the quarry has gone into overdrive too so to provide for the roads.. Either that on tidying up after the primetime doc in case they feature in any future follow ups.
