Medical Card Review for somene with Chronic Illness's

Hi, My 20 yr old son was granted a medical card 3yrs ago due to him being diagnosed with 3 chronic illness's. It is due to expire February 2020

At the time it took forever to get the card, despite sending everything asked for. Parents income, expenses etc. letters from consultants re his condition's which will always be there, and details of the medication and treatment he needs just to have some type of life and attend school and now college.

He rang up couple of weeks ago about how he goes about getting the renewal done and two days later he received in the post a pin number for doing it online.

To be honest we are very unsure about doing it online as his entitlement to the card was based on his illness's and not our family income. which is just an average wage but over the threshold for general applications for a medical card. And we felt that doing it online would be difficult as if the review is anything like the initial application, then they will be looking for all different types of evidence about his illness again.

He rang them up and explained this and asked could they send him out a paper form of the renewal form and they said they would, but as of yet he has not received this.

Is there anyone who has had to do anything similar and could tell us about the process. Like do we need consultants and Gp letters/reports again. details of any other expenses related to the illness's. And also in their experience is the renewal process as difficult and long as the initial application.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi there.

Unfortunately the letter you received with a pin in the post is a full review, and they use a full blank medical card application for this.

If you want to ensure he keeps the card you will need to provide yes all his financial details and updated medical reports/doctors letters to ensure they assess him on medical grounds.

The form takes 5-7 working days to be sent out this is why you have not received it. It will be a new application form (it is the correct one even though its a review)

Theres no way around it unfortunately, once they want the full review they want the full review. Sometimes people are reviewed quite close to the last time they were reviewed also.

Online is quickest and safe, you will need to upload all financial details like his income and outgoings, then once you have a reference number you can post or email in the medical reports if you feel safer.

At the moment they are working on the 22/11 for online renewals and 08/11 for paper ones, so online is being processed a little quicker.
