What ever about having to factor in a half hour time diff I just can't get my head around 3/4!

You wouldn't have to get your head around it in reality. It's not legally recognised and is only used by roadhouses on the Nullarbor. As long as you've got daylight, there's nothing there to stop for. Apart from hitting a golf ball towards Antartica (didn't reach, found water :)

    Are you new here?

    image.png

also Chatham Islands are legally UTC+12:45, summer +13:45, which makes sense

r/newzealand - Most of the South Island should be in a different time zone

    It did, actually.

The orginal reason for having standard time throughout the country was to facilitate railways and their timetables, but this wasn't an issue as between Britain and Ireland, because of course there were no rail services across the Irish Sea. Hence Britain and ireland had different standard times.

But it did start to cause anomalies when telegraph services got going — the time a telegram was marked as received in London could be up to 25 minutes earlier than the time it was recorded as sent in Dublin. This wasn't really seen by anyone as a problem until the Easter Rising in 1916 led to a flurry of telegrams back and forth relaying and then correcting information, or sending and then countermanding orders about how to deal with the situation. Inconsistencies in the way the telegrams were time-stamped led to huge headaches when the official military reports were being prepared later on, analysing the events and the responses to them in detail. Did the people who sent this telegram at this time actually do so with the benefit of information contained in that telegram, apparently only sent to them at a later time? — that kind of thing. So in October 1916 they did awy with Dublin Mean Time and put the whole of the then UK on a single standard time.

Technically Alan Shepard's flight didn't achieve orbit. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth the following year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_space_travel_by_nationality Romania and France had astronauts in space before the Americans started giving trips on their oversized shuttle.

Berlin or Bonn? Territorial Voting for Germany’s Capital in the 1991 Bundestag grafik.png

    "

In 1991, the German Bundestag held a vote to determine the capital of a reunified Germany.

There were two options: Berlin and Bonn (the former capital of West Germany). The map shows the voting results of deputies elected from territorial constituencies. As can be seen, Bonn won in this group.

However, there were also deputies elected from party lists, and they preferred Berlin. Thanks to their votes, Berlin became the capital (the overall margin was just 2 votes(!) 491 to 489).

There was one more detail: six deputies elected from territorial constituencies skipped the vote.

Had they shown up, Germany’s capital today could very well have been Bonn. "

    Dublin City Plan 1922

    39354.jpg

Note the geometric road layouts of planned new suburbs that later were developed in a different pattern as Marino, Crumlin, Clontarf, Cabra and a huge new area of reclaimed land from Dublin Bay from Sandymount out to Blackrock.

The principal rail lines are also highlighted.

You didn't, you'd have had to move your clock by 34 mins and 39 seconds, as the change to London time occurred in October at the same time as Winter Time.

Much like their gun violence rate, Americans are in league with the 3rd world with their cultural practices.

Kind of interesting how the plan also re-aligns the City Center to focus on the new Central Station beside the Four Courts. Would probably have encouraged movement towards the middle of Dublin and away from the orbit of O’Connell Street.
