FWIW the German figure is 3.7% and the Irish figure is 4.0%

We're right on the cusp of where yellow would turn green.

The type that generates lots of long-distance return flights by visiting relatives.

Think of Irish people in Australia - how often will they fly back here for a visit, or will people fly out to visit them? Or the majority of Indians and Chinese I know in Ireland will fly home once a year too.

Those return flights alone will generate more carbon than a person should generate in an entire year if we're going to limit climate change. We really need to re-evaluate how we think about that. Instead we're ramping it up.

Cambodia should probably be marked as tied to the USD. It was interesting being able to settle bills with both USD and the local currency which was about 4.000 riel/USD.

Ecuador do have their own national coins but all banknotes are USD.

I just got back from Bulgaria and was about to cry foul when I saw it marked as a euro-using country. But then I found out it is adopting the Euro on 1st Jan 2026! That was news to me. I occasionally saw prices there indicated in euro as well as Bulgarian lev and a small number of times you could pay in either currency. But mostly just lev.

Sorry but that's just silly logic. So many things wrong with it:

You should not be considering things like this. We have freedom of movement so go and use it. A world where people will not fly somewhere because of carbon is a dystopia.

Flying will be decarbonised or carbon neutral in the future using sustainable jetfuel.

Absolutely zero Indians or Chinese have ever thought "you know, I'd like to emigrate to the west but I just don't want to increase my carbon footprint". The idea you would make a decision so life-changing as emigration with reference to your carbon footprint is bizarre.

    what is this 'sustainable jetfuel'?

Animated urban growth map of Dublin from 1975 to 2014

    Dublin_Urban_Growth1.gif

Good animation of how the city and its commuter hinterland has expanded over a 40 year period, although I think the west of Dublin wasn't quite as built up in 1975 as portrayed on the map.

They looked quite like southern penguins, but in fact were only distantly related to them. Their closest surviving relative is apparently the razorbill.

Yes, they were hunted to extinction (for their down, rather than for their meat). But their habitat was always more perilous than that of their distant cousins in the south — they were predated on by polar bears. Southern penguins have no land-based predators.

    No, it's not silly logic.

Climate change is very real; there's lots of (mostly ineffective) stuff happening on it at the moment which wouldn't happen at all if it were fake. Your post reads like climate change denial tbh, and they idea we have freedom to burn the planet is right out of the American Republican handbook. "You should not be considering things like this" - but why on earth not?

A return flight from, say, Ireland to Australia generates around 7 tonnes of carbon per person. Return to India is about 4 tonnes. We need to be getting emissions down to 5 tonnes per person per year about now, and down to 2 tonnes of less by 2050 (see for example How Bad Are Bananas by Mike Berners-Lee). So clearly generating 4-7 tonnes a year to visit relatives isn't acceptable.

There's no evidence flying will be carbon neutral in the near future. In fact it's one of them fastest growing sources of carbon. Sustainable Aviation Fuel isn't close to being a solution.

I agree people don't think about their carbon footprint when emigrating. That's why I highlighted it and said it's something we really need to re-evaluate. Long-distance immigration/emigration can have no part to play in a sustainable society.

Climate change is definitely real and I don’t deny it at all. But any attempt to introduce rationing or movement restrictions for the sake of climate change must be resisted.
Insisting on basic freedoms like freedom of movement is not American, it’s what everyone wants.
Any political party that attempted to limit everyone’s annual flying would be booted out immediately as the opposition ran on a platform that they would not introduce these restrictions. This is as it should be.

Sustainable jet fuel is something you can already get. Some airlines are including this in their mix. It’s carbon neutral biofuel and there’s nothing futuristic about it. I would support eventually mandating its use which would raise prices somewhat as fuel costs are a component in ticket prices.

that sounds like a good discussion, but one for a different thread.

You make no argument why personal whimsy or privilege should take priority over the health of the planet. It is an absurd position that needs serious justification. But you've made no attempt to do so. "It's what people want" is the cry of a pampered child and shouldn't be indulged.

Sustainable aviation fuel as a realistic alternative is pie in the sky - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/14/sustainable-jet-fuel-report

Fair. I wanted to make my initial point way back with a relevant map (if one that was very wrong, as was pointed out)

So to get back on topic, here's a map of Europe as Gaeilge

I have long thought that Green ideology is a cult. The poster tried to engage with you in a discussion and you went full cult mode to attack, believing that there is no other discussion other than imposing restrictions. People won't accept restrictions, but maybe you could have explained why changes need to be made, then people will listen. Not in full green mode though ! Alternatives have to be part of any solution. Bio jet fuel may very well be nonsense as it effects the food chain badly as does any bio fuel. But no, full green attack is your position.
