Fiesta zapper opened someone else's car!

    As the title suggests!

The missus was in the supermarket car park this morning, walked back to what she thought was her Fiesta pressed the zapper and the car opened. Only when she noticed the strange new umbrella in the spotless boot did it dawn on her that it wasn't her car! Being a decent person she didn't steal the umbrella but closed the boot, walked away and found her car!

My question: is this a regular occurrence, or is it very unusual?

Her car is a 162 reg Fiesta, the one she unlocked was a 152.

It’s statistically very unlikely but still possible.

I took delivery of a Corolla and an Avensis on the same day (built on different continents) and they had exactly the same physical key code, the keys would turn the lock and ignition but obviously wouldn’t start the engine.
1 in 1000 10000 chance if that happening IIRC, I’d imagine the odds of the remote being the same are much less likely.

Absolutely. She heard the lock clicking and saw the (wrong) car's indicators flashing twice.

It's pretty hard to hide in the back seat of a Fiesta.

Happened to my father with a Mk1 Fiesta donkey years ago. Got into an identical Fiesta parked where he thought he left his one, wondered why the seat was out of position and the ashtray full of cigarettes. When he got back out the penny dropped when he checked the reg. I'm surprised this would happen these days though.

Someone I know did similar, also with a fiesta a few years back
Same colour car, same year, parked near each other, 1 digit in the difference of the reg plate,
Think it was the key she used to get into the strangers car...

Is it an aftermarket remote central locking/alarm, or factory?

Happened to someone I know with a Lexus a few years ago. His key was able to unlock a neighbour's Lexus. The other lad went nuts and demanded a new car I believe.

Factory issue. Zapper came with the new car! We live in a small town, so it could well happen again! Henceforth I won't be leaving my stash of coke in the glove compartment!

good plan, don't leave the Bacardi either. (my garage door key opens all my vehicles bar the modern one.)
