Hi all. I signed up to the green cert and am wondering if any one knows if the course fee of c.2-3k is tax deductible in your farming sole trade tax return ? My view would be that it would have to be tax deductible as you are essentially updating your existing farming knowledge which is necessary to be a better farmer .. ! Has any one talked to their accountant on the point, and have people taken a tax deduction for the course cost in their farming tax return ?

    THanks.

The above should answer your question - as you are the owner/sole trader i dont believe it would be tax deductible, but ask your accountant the question as he will know more about your set up

thanks for replies. Unfortunately, those revenue links aren't really relevant as green cert isnt a qualifying course for the tuition fees and the first link is more around subscriptions rather than training courses.

The course would basically have to meet the general criteria being wholly and exclusively incurred for the farming trade and revenue (rather than capital) in nature. I would be of the view that it would meet this criteria and therefore should be deductible as an expense in your farming trade.

However, interested to hear of other peoples views and prior experience.

It fits entirely within the parameters as follows

A course is relevant to your business if it:

allows your employees to gain knowledge necessary for their role
helps your employees perform their current or future work duties better.

And claim the cost of any upskilling you do from course fees to literature to travel cost and accommodation...all of it..
