Overtime rates in Civil Service

    Our section have been offered overtime to clear a backlog of work that exists due to crap implementation of new software, but I can't get a straight answer of what hourly rate I would be paid. Option is either do it after normal work is completed in the evenings, or come in on Saturday either.

    I'm a post 2013 entrant CO on point 3 of scale. Anyone any ballpark guess of what I might be on hourly if I take it up?

    Thanks

    I had a lot of overtime in my last department. Overtime is done on point 1 of your scale. Last time I did overtime this year (CO scale) I got €55 (gross) for a 3.5 hour shift during the week after normal hours. I got €153 (gross) for 7.5 hours on a Saturday. I think between 8 and 9 am on Saturday is paid at double time and after 1 pm also.

    I make it as €14.37 an hour gross on weekdays or Saturday morning and €23 an hour gross on Saturday afternoons.

    Third point of the CO scale is €497.36 per week.

    497.36/43.25 = €11.50 an hour + 25% = €14.37 weekdays
    €11.50 an hour * 2 = €23.00 Saturday afternoons.

    Your calculation is incorrect.

    As the gross is under 35k it's 1.5 x 1st point on scale, then double time on current point. So;

    459.65/43.25 = €10.63 an hour + 50% = €15.95 weekdays. The rest is correct.

    My calculation matches the last overtime I did. I think the bolded part below in the circular linked earlier covers this situation. The hourly rate in your calculation is less than the hourly rate of the top of the CO scale so the calculation in (b) is used.
    (a) for those who are on salaries of up to €35,000 (inclusive of allowances in the nature of pay), overtime is paid at time and a half at the first point of the appropriate scale. This formula does not apply to any scale where this provision would result in overtime being paid at less than time at any point on the scale. In the case of such scales, the formula set out in (b) below will apply. Please note that Section 6 of Circular 2/2014 applies to those on revised payscales under Clause 2.31 of the Haddington Road Agreement.
    (b) for those on salaries (inclusive of allowances in the nature of pay) of €35,000 or greater, overtime will be paid at the rate of time and a quarter at the individual’s scale point.

    I ended up getting 138 for 6 hours on a Saturday afternoon, so €23 per hour before tax which will definitely help coming up to Christmas.

    Cheers for all the info, nothing is straightforward in the civil service, as I've come to understand over the last few years!
