The Farming Protest @ Dublin City Centre

Looks like there is going to be traffic chaos in Dublin City, with the following roads closed tomorrow: Fran McNulty had tweeted the following:
Kevin Street, Cuffe Street, Kildare Street, Merrion Square South, Dawson Street & Merrion Row will remain closed tomorrow as farmer protests continue.

Having a look at the protests and what they are protesting about it almost seems like they are trying to be the Irish gilet jaunes. What started as a protest/movement against low beef prices seems to have morphed into anti-vegan, anti-climate and other that seem to go hand in hand with those issues. Indeed they are ultimately saying is that the rural way of life is dying.

What say you? Are you on the side of the farmer?

I think if they were anyone but farmers the garda wouldn't have been as nice to them.

This rural v urban thing is nonsense. What do you think the average citizen of Dublin can or should do? We’re not out to get you ffs

we need to deamonise these farmers quick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,886 ✭✭✭✭Roger_007

Does anyone know what specificly the farmers are looking for, or are they just demonstrating that they can clog up the city any time they want?

Patient about what exactly? This group seem to have a scatter gun set of demands, ranging from issues on direct provision to technical classification for animals.

Seems rather disperate, so there is no hope of them succeeding.

Shouldn't the farmers and their lack of negotiating skills be protesting at the HQ of the retailers, or is that too logical?

it would be a good next move, along side other protests, such as this one, as this problem is highly complex, and involves many different elements, not just political ones

The EU will step in with more subsidies, grants or another sweetener for the farmers at the expense of another sector and they will all be happy.

What's complex about it? If they're making a loss, as they tend to claim, either demand a higher price from the people they supply, or get out of the business.

not at all, this is the fundamental failures of our current economic/political ideologies, we re watching it unfold, we re all effectively experiencing it

There’s unreal anger in rural Ireland.

I’ve flagged this a few times before on various threads but yes, this has been coming a long time.

A sense nobody is listening. Maybe they will listen now.

They are demanding a higher price but they are dealing with a cartel controlled by Larry Goodman. Also inaction from minister Creedregarding the agreement that was reached 2 months ago. Price of beef is now €90 per animal less than the EU average. No of them are looking for a handout just fairplay in the supply chain

People in dublin are living in a bubble. Maybe they will wake up if they are disrupted a bit.

doubt it, protests nowadays seem to entrench people

If that's the case, take it to the garda or EU level. Disrupting ther people that subsidise their industry and local authorities isn't the way to go.

Sorry but there’s unreal anger out there.

It needs to be adequately addressed.

I haven't encountered any delays myself (coming in on the North Circular Rd), either they're approaching from the south or they're getting a taste of Dublin traffic.

Have they been successful? As stated earlier this one seems to be a hodge podge of unconnected demands. The M50 threat is beyond stupid and won't win any friends nor support.

Acting angrily just means postponing the adult part of the conversation and everyone else sits on the moral high ground until people stop venting like intemperate children.

Again as you seemed to have missed it earlier...what should we do?

Although I support them, social media does seem to be making protesting worst all sort of demands get tacked on to the main issue cranks with minor or obscure demands get tagged on the issue, those who want to vent at the government get tagged on to the protest.

Its happening everywhere and may be linked to ideas about the supposed end of democracy

There's generally one of some form outside the Dail almost every day. It's called democracy and freedom of speech Anyone with an axe to grind can protest and usually does.

What would that do, does the government really have the power to force the main meat company to pay more or operate in a different way.

Remember we live in a free capitalist( sort of ) of society any interference fro the government and the produces would be straight to the courts.

Not including this one as such but there's definitely a few constants in various protests in Dublin City in recent times.

-Same people involved no matter what.

    -Hijacking for their own means.

-Professional protesters who'd rather cause disturbances than actually work.

They should look for us to leave the EU if they want that level of market control.

I really don't think so. The big ones just get highlighted more. Social media does magnify things especially the "anger".
