I'm starting a new job after Christmas. Does anyone know if I can give up work the week before Christmas and get the dole for about two or three weeks until I start my new job?

I know if you give up work, you can't claim it for 9 weeks but since I have a new job sorted.

Asked and answered your own question.

Why would your case be any different?

You won't qualify for Jobseekers so what payment do you think you would get?

Go down to the them and say your contract will end soon and you are starting a new job after Xmas. I'm sure they will sort you out for the few weeks you're out of work

I'm going to finish my job before Christmas as well. I think I might take it back up again after having a little break and a relax. Probably some time in early January. While you're down there, could you ask them if there's a few bob for me as well to tide me over

Do you not think they'll ask him for proof that his contract is up rather than just taking his word for it?

I told my current employer about my new job. I wanted to be fair to them. But wasn't given a start date for my new job yet. I told my employer that I would let them know as soon as I get a start date in January. They pushed me for a date giving me an excuse of the accountant needing it. I only have to give a week's notice!!! So I told them till the end of the year and I might as well finish the week and I'm finishing up on the 3rd of January... But I'm stuck if I don't start my new job until the end of January.

Since my employer pushed me to give them a date, would social welfare be understanding?

Nope. You shouldn’t have given notice til you had a start date. Especially if you only have to give a weeks notice.

    Lesson learned.
