    https://www.cso.ie/en/interactivezone/statisticsexplained/birthsdeathsandmarriages/lifeexpectancytables/
They showed a life expectancy at birth of 78.4 years for men, and 82.8 years for women.
That's 4.4 years, not 8, at birth. By the time you get to 65, the difference is 2.9 years. https://www.cso.ie/en/statistics/birthsdeathsandmarriages/irishlifetables/

    1. Congenital diseases - female embryos with congenital diseases are more likely to die in the womb, often in the first few weeks, before the mother even knows she is pregnant. A higher proportion of male embryos with congenital diseases survive past birth, but die at a young age. Approximately 21 male humans are born for every 20 female humans.

    2. Risk-taking behaviour - men aged 17-25 in particular engage in risky behaviour, e.g. drive dangerously, join the military, engage in violent crime.

    3. Historical factors - in the past, men smoke an rank a lot more than women and a higher proportion took part in more dangerous work - construction, asbestos, transport, etc. However, the effect of this is reducing.

    4. Typical diseases - men die of the diseases they get in middle / old age, women live with the diseases they get.

    Great post.

It is and it's not V. Some of the unhealthy lifestyle aspects narrowed because women started to catch up, but yeah in general people tend to be more healthy alright.

On the dangerous work front the gender difference is extremely stark and any reduction is slight. From the EU's stats on the matter.

Men were considerably more likely than women to have an accident at work. In 2015, more than two out of every three (68.4 %) non-fatal accidents at work in the EU-28 involved men. The difference was even starker in relation to fatal accidents at work, as 19 out of every 20 fatal accidents involved men. One factor that influences these statistics is the different types of work that men and women carry out and the activities in which they work; for example, there are far more accidents in the mining, manufacturing or construction sectors, which tend to be male-dominated. Finally, it is also generally the case that men tend to work on a full-time basis, whereas women are more likely to work on a part-time basis; as such, with women spending a shorter period of time (on average) in the workplace this may also reduce their chances of having an accident.

NB the shorter hours worked, yet if you wander around the same site the Pay Gap™ gets wheeled out...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Going to the doctor occasionally and talking about health matters with your friends helps. Damn those sly women and their healthier nonsense.
