Was putting a drop of oil in yesterday and my missus' sister's partner was there and he said this looks like it needs replacing.
Its the tube the dipstick goes into. Not sure myself.

    Looks grand?

You could wipe the dirt from the top away so it wont fall into the oil pan

Nothing wrong with that. He's a dope.

Why does he think it needs replacing? What did he suggest is wrong with it?

And when it comes to cars, rarely. Pal.

Is that a challenge? Spot number of wrong answers vs. the right answers since you started posting. :-)

Maybe he could see something we cant in the photo.
I couldn't conclusively say from those photos that a piece hasn't broken off the top. Some vw /audi have been known to snap the top bit off the dip stick tube.
This can be fairly serious if you didn't know it and were dipping the oil based on the lower stop point result being that very low oil could look normal on dipstick.

Well he's giving some crap advice. What if he said that to your mother and she went and spend a few hundred getting the tube pulled out and replaced.

Bad advice needs to be qualified to see if it's good

Thanks. That's what he was suggesting. He does not speak much English so I got it thru him saying it in Portuguese to my missus and she relaying it back to me.

From knowing other VW / Audi cars in the past I think he may be correct. I think the tube should extend further up. Did someone cut a bit off the top? Compare it to same model car if you can find one. The top of the tubes can be replaced on a lot of VW/Audi's cheaply enough.

Might it be missing a grommet thing that would normally be attached to the top plastic cover ?

There's obvious metal damage in the 2nd picture. I doubt it left the factory with bits of metal swarf hanging off the edges, something has broken off that.

I stopped at a mechanic on the way home and get said it's broken but still doing the job it's meant to do so drive on.
The boy conor, guess you were wrong 'pal'.

As long as the dipstick is not being allowed to travel downwards any further than it should, it should be ok.
You could do serious damage if the dipstick is giving the wrong reading.
