Gas have been looking at a car with a dealer for January and we were about 50 euro out on the pcp. He phoned me today and said he could do the deal but had to be today as they needed to hit targets. I didn't like the rush of it all so said id chat to them Monday. He reckoned had to be a deposit today couldn't stand over price Monday.. main dealer so bit strange. I didn't do anything this evening. Was nearly 6 o clock.
    Cheers,

It's not the end of the month, never mind end of the quarter, who is checking in on targets. If he could do it today, he can do it on Monday.

    Yeah that's why I reckoned.. it's a saving of1800 so I'm tempted..

Very strange but he's in sales and the job is all about hitting targets.

Don't feel any pressure in taking him up.

The offer was made to make his target which is not putting you (the customer) first.

Is the €50 off the monthly pcp payment or is it €1800 off the purchase price?

Can't know for sure but to me this sounds just like 'the talk'. A talented sales person will nearly tell you anything to close a sale.

    What car is it?

While it's not end of quarter or end of month it's possible that the sales people have a target to hit on weekends to justify bringing in extra staff to work weekends this time of year. It could also just be a tactic to see how really interested you are in buying a car. Lots of people go into showrooms to kill time rather than actually buy a car.

I'd imagine if you ring them next week and said you will do deal offered on Saturday they wouldn't decline.

    Don't overthink it.
If the deal suits you take it.

It's 0 percent pcp 50 off the pcp... They could be messing with the settlement figure..he's new enough sales guy I'd say so probably under pressure to make a sale

Is it a car already in stock or a factory order? Its very possible it's already in the country and the dealer might be eager to shift it or swap it for something else with another dealer..

    That's it really.

That said, there is often varying levels of importer or manufacturer support going on the background that dont necessarily align with monthly or quarterly figures.

VW could be giving the dealers an additional discount in the background to push sales etc which could start or end at any date, could be something like that. Sales manager may have copped it and that OP was interested and someone was told to get back onto him with new figures.

I’ve worked in sales all my life (not car sales) and if the offer is good on a Friday it’s good on the Monday ... it is a tactic to see if you are actually interested and willing to make a deal .. don’t be put under pressure

Tiguan highline with technology pack, 1.5 petrol dsg

Bought one of these in March for end of quarter at 0% as well without a trade in. Pm if you want to swap offers

Actually mine was the rline version but I can’t seem to configure that now on their website

Well nothing I can do now anyway. I just noticed on the vw site that they are doing a sale event Friday and Saturday offerring free servicing so I'll see if they can do that.. I'll see what they say tomorrow

Had a similar experience in JDuffy VW with a deadline to order and once only deal. Went over to Frank Keane and got a better deal the week after off a more relaxed nicer guy. The other guy was so pushy it made me feel uncomfortable. So make of that what you will!

The interesting thing is I went in about a month ago to the dealer.. was all business then I heard nothing for three weeks..and then it's all go go go.. anyway there's no panic

That was the exact same experience I've had of those two place also.

Seems like a trend alright.. not sure who would sign up to a one day only offer at 530 on a Saturday evening. They are not selling carrots :)

    TBH I would.

If I was getting the car I wanted at the price I wanted I'd be on the road on Sunday morning.

Well the price was good anyway. I checked in with another dealer this evening and they said they'd struggle to match it. I haven't phoned back the original salesman yet. The guy from this evening is going to phone me back tomorrow to see if he can match it. Just not that happy with the erratic level of contact over the last few weeks. Even the lad this evening said the one day price is a cod..if it was good Saturday it will be good all week.. on the face of it they giving me a strong price for my car..

Anyone any idea how much fuel costs would be with the 1.5 petrol versus 2 litre Diesel?

I'm factoring in about 25 percent more expensive to run on petrol

I gave a dealer a one day only offer in last week before Xmas last year, 2k below asking and I got the car. I was bluffing of course but I told him I'd take the car there and then if he gave me the price I wanted. Obviously he still made a few quid but I did have other cars to look at.
They are bluffing too, its just I wasn't in the mood to negotiate over and back I was going to buy a car that week no matter what happened because I had to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,002 ✭✭✭micks_address

so the dealer from Saturday says the deal is dead.. that they had margin to do one 'massive' deal Saturday..

waiting for the call back from yesterday to see if it can be matched.. if not ill leave it.. sometimes these things have a way of working out for the best

Things are meant to be indeed.

Western motors came back to me today. Beat Joe Duffy swords by 500 on the price.

Car ordered. Not sure if i have a good deal or not but im trading a 172D Octavia DSG Diesel Style/Sportline 2 litre 150bhp 58.5k km on it. Will be 65k km by time trading id imagine

    New Car

1.5 Petrol Tiguan Highline, Technology Pack.

It also comes with Leather as standard for 2020 (was nice surprise)

    Probably mid February delivery.

I was looking at new tyres on the Octavia for March Id say and 300 euro dsg oil change which I can avoid now. 3 services also included with the Tiguan.

Only concern i have is ill regret the mpg on the petrol... but im looking forward to the smoother engine experience and it should be a really comfortable car.

The way I'm looking at it was Octavia cost me 35.5k, The Tiguan is list 42.5k

Its costing me 6980 over 36 months. That includes extra monthly payment and deposit. Monthly will be 442 There is a 7k difference in the list price of each car so seems ok. Only time will tell i suppose!

    Cheers,
    Mick

So it's in around 200 a month extra for 36 months to move from a 172 octavia to a new Tiguan?
Sounds about right to me since you have gone from a car worth low 20s (at a guess) to a car worth low 40s....
Octavia should devalue approx 11k in 3 more years (let's say 22k to 12k) and the Tiguan should devalue by approx 20k (let's say 42k to low 20s in 3 years)
So your 7k increase is probably covering at least that much extra depreciation so I'd say you did OK on that deal.
New cars depreciate heavily, fact of life, so hope you enjoy the Tiguan and the mpg is OK for you.

Well my octavia was 35.5k.. so it's lost 13 in 2.7 years..

My skoda dealer was offering me 18 for my car two weeks ago and Frank Keane vw offered me 15 about two months ago... I fully expected to be putting in about 5k in the summer to a deal to buy a car around 40k.. with this deal I get to avoid new tyres and dsg oil change.. that and the Tiguan is a nice spec.. i was surprised they including leather as standard now.. was bit dubious so checked the web site and sure enough it's listed as standard equipment.its pretty much maxed out on spec..digital cockpit, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, heated windscreen nozzles .. digital sign recognition?

Having three services included is nice bonus and the panoramic sunroof should make the car brighter inside ..

All round happy... Going for the Atlantic blue metallic with black leather..

I know the Tiguan is due a facelift in 2020 and it's a pre historic petrol engine rather than hybrid or electric so I won't be winning any friends on that front..

Have to just forget about it now.. February good few months away..

    Cheers,
    Mick

Your Octavia's trade-in value would have been priced at a 3 year old car rather than 2.7 years. It will be 3 years old when you actually trade it so they value it accordingly at the time of making the deal. Also you rarely get anything back on extras you paid to bump up the price to 35.5k on day one. They will look for more for it over a regular Octavia when selling it but will tell you they are worth nothing extra when trading in.

Yep exactly what I got and knew I'd get.. I added the Canton audio, dab which were pointless additions to the Octavia.. the dsg cost I think .2.5k extra so I probably got 1200 back on that... If you want to get the lowest possible depreciation then don't add extras.. sportline I think was an extra 2k that was worth it... Led lights I wouldn't go without.. the sports seats are nice in the Octavia but I have a bit of a dodgy back so the Tiguan might suit me better..

Nobody makes money buying cars. That's for sure.. I'd actually have preferred to buy a Honda CR-V hybrid but to get a similar spec to the Tiguan on pcp with Honda was never going to work out..

Octavia is 172 July 1st car so not sure how they priced it..

I think what worked in my favour a bit is Western motors are both skoda and vw dealers.. not sure of the reality of the situation but the vw salesman said he checked in with the skoda manager and they have a customer looking for my octavias spec so were able to offer a bit more.on the strength of that..
