Tax after separation

We separated in August and I informed tax office in November. Today 2/3’s of my wages were taken by income tax. I’m devastated! I was the main income in our joint assessment so I realised I was going to lose tax credits etc but thought would kick in in January. Tax office informed me today that as I’m not the assessable spouse I am taxed as single for the year and owe tax office €3000.... €1500 which was taken from wages today. I can’t understand how I am not the assessable spouse as I was always the main earner and looked after the taxes. Tax office said if I was the assessable spouse I could’ve kept married credits until end of year! They say they have no letter on file of either of us registering as assessable spouse so somehow it became my husband. Angry and upset is an understatement. Anyone any advice?
