    Quick one,
N57 engine oil servive interval is meant to be 25k kms between servce
Which to me is crazy, i used to change my aum 1.8t every 10k

I want to keep the dealer history but i don't want to wait so long

Would they know if i changed oil and filter myself using oem filter ?

    Any thoughts ?
    .regards

If you really want to you can change oil and filter when you like, there is no particular way anyone will know when it last was done.

Change it, how many engines were ruined by changing the oil at a shorter date than specified.

You could use a Mahle filter which is what BMW usually fit, same filter just not with bmw stamp on it. It would be difficult to determine what is there when replacing it due to used oil contaminating the paper filter.

For the price i would just go to bmw and get a filter..

You could change it. But there might not be any point.

Lets say you change at the oil at 25k intervals @ €100 per service - the engine lasts for 400,000km.
Then you change the oil at 10k intervals @ €100 per service. the engine might last 450,000km.
But that an extra 29 services which is €2,900. - Is that extra 50,000km really worth €2,900 and the time spent doing it?

My point is, you can do it. It *might* help the engine last longer, but it might not. The potential life extension might not be worth the money spent on the enhanced servicing.

I see a lot of people on about pristine cars that have oil changed at stupid intervals like every 2,500 or 3000 kms. Yeah the car might be a minter and have a longer lifespan but look at the grossly inflated lifecycle costs of that car from the excessive servicing.
The lifecycle cost of the car would probably be minimised if servicing was kept to the bare minimum. Sure, the car wouldn't last as long but you'd save many thousands on servicing costs over the lifetime. That saved money can then be put towards a replacement vehicle.

I highly doubt any engine using a 25k oil change will last to 400k kms.
The reason the interval is stretched so much is largely to satisfy fleet buyers over a 3-4 year replacement cycle.
Any issues with wear are only exacerbated with extended drain intervals.
You only have to look at the N47 for evidence of what can happen when internal parts wear prematurely.

Oil change cost me less than 50 euro diy, thats using genuine filter and Mobil oil.
I think its cheap insurance and I do it at less than 1/2 the manufacturers recommended interval.
