After Sky to Freeview/Sat

Hi I was hoping someone could advise please.

We were with Sky but left because of awful internet.

We moved to Vodafone great service since.

However the TV is through the internet and it’s dropped once or twice for short periods.

The installer at the time said something about connecting the old Sky to get channels if Vodafone internet was down. Coming into winter we worries about that.

I can’t remember if he said connect the old Sky box or what.

I bought and iviewhd box off Amazon and tried to connect but nothing happened.

There’s 3 cables coming in and none of them picked up channels.

Would Sky have terminated the satellite?

That's a terrestrial box. It means it picks up signals through your aerial. If you are on east coast or close to the border you might be able to pick up the UK signal (Freeview), but not using the old sky cables.

Unfortunately that is a Freeview receiver which is the equivalent of a Saorview receiver and wouldn't be able to display satellite tv.

I would recommend you buy one of these:

I have to replace my old ZGemma box and I was looking at the above boxes. I want a smart box that I can install 3rd party apps on it. If anyone has these boxes can you confirm if they accept 3rd party apps?

If not does anyone recommend a box that has satellite connections and can have 3rd party apps?

Thank you so much. The Manhattan box arrived today. I cannot believe it, the quality is so good, the TV guide works and there are so many channels. We even have ITV again. Thank you so much.

I recommended it to my sister as she has Sky for 15+ years. However she said if she cancelled Sky, Sky would remove the Dish. Whereas the previous owner of our house installed our dish we bought 20 years ago. Is this true? I didn’t think Sky would come to get the dish.

Thanks again. I am truly amazed by what you suggested. We spoke and said we’d save up for the recording one maybe next year when our Vodafone tv contract is up.

With Sky, you own the dish and box.

They wouldn't take the dish even if they could anyway.

Just be aware you won't get the Irish channels with a FreeSat box.
You need an aerial for that and depending on location you might need an indoor/outdoor one.

Slight correction on this - if you have a sky q box, then you own the dish, they own the box. If you have anything older than that (HD, plus, etc), then you own both the dish and the box.

Also, as has been pointed out elsewhere, if you have sky q it's possible that the lnb on the dish won't work.
