    Hi

Have the in laws staying with me for a few days over Christmas. Rented house.

We have a spare room and to make things better for them, would like to have a TV in there. I already have a spare 32 inch Samsung flatscreen. At this stage it a about 10 years old. Has hdmi and a USB port etc.
Does NOT have WiFi or a network port.

What would be the cheapest and dirtiest way to get a tv scenario running here, one that would have RTE possibly.

I know I could get saorview, but this, I think involves buying a box, cabling etc. Would like something less simple if possible.

Check the model number on the TV, it may have a Saorview tuner, if so an indoor aerial may work.

According to this Thread, Saorview will work with that TV

I had that model and I can confirm it is Soarview compatible.. I only ever used a cheap indoor antenna I picked up in Dealz for €1.50. depends where exactly you are though. I'm within 10km if the transmitter with a clear view.

Nice one. So what do I potentially need here.

Buy some indoor aerial, plug it into tv.

Any set top box or anything else needed?

Nope just need to do a scan for channels in the settings.

Thanks. Can anyone recommend an aerial. I presume it’s aerial or is it antenna. Not sure if it’s vhf or uhf etc.

Any aul aerial will do, they're all the same.

Which one of these (attached) would be the best option?

It all depends on how close you are to a Saorview transmitter

Put your town into this to check https://www.saorview.ie/en/get/coverage

    Thanks!!

    I am 37km away.

    See attached.

What would I need to get to possibly make this work?

If you can get a loan of an aerial to try that's a great starting point.

If not then check out this
    https://www.freetv.ie/what-aerial-do-i-need-to-work-with-in-galway-from-the-maghera-or-tonabrocky-transmitter/

Not sure if that's an indoor or outdoor one but it's an option to consider.

Thanks. It seems with the aerials mentioned that they have to be mounted in the attic or outside. I’m in a rented house so this is not really an option.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Give the lads in Free Tv a call or drop them an email and they can point you in the right direction - Not affiliated with them but I've used them before and found them decent to deal with.

Gave them a shout, very responsive and helpful in fairness.

    They recommended this one: https://www.freetv.ie/tv-aerial-kits/

It needs to be plugged in

    What do ye think?

Go for it. 22 quid isn't a huge outlay for a saorview setup for the in laws.

If it doesn't work ring the lads back.

Plenty of time to get sorted before Xmas.

True. I think I recall reading somewhere before - somebody said don’t bother your @rse with a ‘plug in’ one - that it was just a gimic. Any thoughts?

OP, I see you’ve bumped this thread three times. You don’t have to keep doing that. This isn’t After Hours where threads drop off the front page in the course of a day. People will see your thread and it will run its natural course.
