Hi guys, I have a 13 year old Cocker spaniel who had surgery over the weekend to remove her spleen (she had a large tumour) She is quite anaemic so I want to add some liver to her diet. She weighs about 13kg, how much should I give her and should I cook it? She is not used to a raw food diet. Also, As she is a very fussy eater, I am just cooking for her rather than trying to get her to eat dog food. I am giving her beef, broccoli and rice, chicken, carrots and small amount of pototo, mince, and I’ll give her a tin of oily fish once or twice a week. Is there anything else I should be adding to her diet? Thanks in advance.

Poor pet x I wish her well

With liver it’s usually 10% of her daily diet but maybe a little more if she needs it.. yes cook it in the oven .. my guy loved it

Spinach and muscles are also high in iron ..

I lost my cocker in August he had cancer on his spleen and liver .. too advanced by the time it was discovered x I hope your little one does really well x

Personally to reduce the risk of the tumor / cancer returning elsewhere I’d reduce her carb intake (carbs fuel cancer)

Have you thought of adding some grilled white fish to her diet? Hake, cod etc? My guy loved it and super easy to digest and great for them

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that Cocker, you always reply to my threads and I knew you had a similar age boy. I’m so sorry you lost him. We were very close to losing Libby. It’s a miracle she’s still here to be honest and I know the chances of the cancer returning are quite high so I want to build her up and give her the best possible chance.

I will take that on board about the carbs. Can dogs do well on just meat and veg? I’m a bit unsure how much I should be feeding her too. Want to try and get her weight up a bit as she has lost about 2kg

Be positive you never know it may not return x I’m so so glad so far she is doing ok x

Dogs can do really well on meat and veg (mainly the raw diet etc) .. but def increase her portion size let her eat if she’s hungry x

What I would say is try and feed her 3/4 small meals each day to build her back up ..

If your just feeding her just beef right now in terms of protein add another protein source .. some minced turkey (boil it and add to the mix) .. some white fish, chicken or lamb mince ..

Maybe some scrambled eggs too .. mix it up a few times per day x

Keep me posted on how Libby is doing x best of luck

Ive always home cooked - cats and dogs love it in this house. I make a big pot every few days, and refridgerate in a big tupperware. To increase appetite in my oldie, I microwave a portion for a couple of seconds to just warm the food - smells good....
I use the bags of frozen white fish fillets (Tesco brand) - cook it in pan with a bit of brown rice, add some veggies chopped finely
Scrambled eggs are a nice light treat
I give meds in a small spoon of natural, no sugar, no palm oil peanut butter
A tin of sardines in oil mashed up - also yummy!
Probiotic natural yogurt good snack too - calcium/protein, and good for the tummy - also a Little cube of cheese for treat

Long life to your little dog ! :)
