Hope this is the right place and someone can help. Have a golden retriever of 8 years and very recently he has started to stray from the house. He has always been an outside dog and previously you could leave the gate open and he wouldn’t leave. Now he has taken to hopping the wall. This is a regular activity now with him.

Any idea why he would change? He has been outside on his own with years

    Is he neutered?

Possibly simply found something interesting out there. Goldens are very highly intelligent dogs, he would not have nearly enough stimulation as an outside dog.

Forgot to mention that he is neteured.

Any ideas on how to change his focus back to staying around?

You mentioned he outside always alone.. I’d say he’s bored .. found something to stimulate him mentally away from the yard ..

Only way to change focus back to staying close . Allow him inside, treat him as a member of the family, stop leaving him alone all the time

You need to secure the area outside before he either goes missing or causes a road accident. As Cocker mentions maybe start including him in your family life.
