Driving licence renewal - is it backdated?

I have an appointment tomorrow to renew my current drivers licence which is due to expire next month.

In getting my documention ready for my appointment I discovered that I appear to have misplaced my drivers licence, so I'll need to take a trip to the local garda station to have it declared lost.

Now however I'm wondering if I could put off renewing my licence until December or even January, as I will be away for a few weeks and so won't be needing my licence for awhile.

However, if my licence expires November and I don't get it renewed until Dec or Jan, will it be backdated to my original expiry in Nov, or will a new one be issued from the date I apply?
Is there any benefit to holding off renewing it if I could squeeze out a few more weeks by waiting until Dec /Jan, or if it's a case the new one will be backdated to Nov, should I just go ahead and get it done tomorrow?

Your licence is valid from when you gave in the pass cert. When you renew you get 10 years from the same date as your last licence expired. No point in putting it off if you have all the paperwork done.

You are incorrect. That may have been the case, but no more. It's 10 years from the date of renewal
