hi can any of you folks recommend a good decent but light in weight lock for a mountain bike. just something to act more of a deterrent while I nip into the shop for maybe 10 minutes.

Some good possibilities there. The Messenger Mini is around 900g in weight but decent enough for nipping into the shop. I carry one on the bike all the time.

To be honest there is no such thing as a deterrent. Either the lock is good enough or not. A lever attack on a U lock takes all of 10 seconds.
Forget about the weight. If your leaving it outside a shop for more than 5 seconds get as good a lock as you can afford.

Get a lock that can't be defeated by a hammer, popped open by rotating the bike frame, or cut by medium-size bolt cutters (less than 1m long). So, basically any lock with three stars from ART. The Kryptonite Series 4 is that standard. There are smaller, lighter locks that meet that standard.
