Hello everyone, I have a question for you all which involves a Cabin log . We have recently built a cabin log in our back garden , the size of the cabin log is 25 squared meters and the height is approx 2.50m , it was basically built for my son to live in so he could save up for his own house because the rent prices are astonishingly high . The Cabin log itself is timber framed all around that is sitting on 6 concrete blocks making it type of a shed. We got a letter from the council about a complaint from the neighbours. The reason why I’m writing this is to know so you need planning permission as this cabin log is basically a shed , there is no foundation or cemented blocks etc. I have heard that you don’t need planning permission but I would like to know is this true or not.

    Thank you

You don’t need planning for a shed. You do need planning for a dwelling, which is what you have if anyone is living in it. You will struggle to get planning, particularly if a compliant has already been made. Sorry for your troubles, you were Poorly advised or poorly researched, but either way it’s your problem now - Either engage in the planning retention process or move your lodger back into the house.

It sounds like the structure in itself is within the limits for garden shed exemptions. But, your son living in it is a serious breach of the planning and building regulations.

The inspection by the council will guide you. If there’s evidence of habitation, they may decide to initiate enforcement proceedings. Or they may give you a change to regularize the planning of the structure of its outside the exemptions, either way, your son needs to move out of it I’m afraid.

Also, if the inspector upholds the planning law, for a shed to be exempt, it has to match in finish and materials that of the main dwelling, I’m
Assuming your main dwelling is not a timber clad building.
