Car dealers access to personal info

I was in a main dealer yesterday looking at cars, the sales man took my first name and mobile number and then we went to look at some cars. He then printed out a quote for 2 cars I was interested in, I was stuck for time so left with the quotes. The quotes have my full name, address and home phone number printed on them. How did he get this info with just my mobile number? Do they have access to databases?

No, but I think it dawned on me. My wife bought a 2nd hand car from a VW dealer over 10 years ago, its possible that they took my details then. The dealer yesterday was Audi.

Info isn't shared between group brands like that.

The only real scenarios are that you've either made an enquiry with them or a sibling company before.

Is the VW dealer you bought from owned by the same people who own the Audi dealership?

Not sure, both in Cork. I don’t recall ever giving them the info online.

Worth digging into it, GDPR and that. You could just ask the dealer.

    Yes.

Same company, if the phone number was in the system it’ll link, you’ll sometimes find recycled phone numbers getting contact from marketing companies based on previous owner of the phone number signing up years ago.

They can only use the information for the purpose which it was gathered and for whom it was gathered. Use by companies in the same group might have been part of the original condition.

I’m pretty sure Audi Cork is not a company in the same group, it is actually the same company, but open to correction.

Different brands, same owners, they share the same crm database.

Tis - but owned by Blackwater Motor Group which is the umbrella company for VW and Audi in Cork.

As far as i know (because your details were already on file) you would have received an opt out ahead of GDPR deadline which if you didnt accept would have been taken as consent for marketing permissions.
