Brought my gf's 2009' Hyundai i30 to get a handbrake imbalance fixed for the NCT. Mechanic said it was the caliper that was sticking and he could not free it up, it was too corroded in the inside. He then put a brand new spurious caliper on the car and charged me €220... Was I robbed ? Seemed expensive just for 1 caliper supplied and fitted.

Nothing wrong with that price in my opinion

Sounds about right tbh. Including labour I would have thought it's spot on.

You could rebuild the old one with new seals and sell it recoop some cash

Nope, for a new caliper, labour & fluids, seems fair.

I thought these used a drum handbrake assembly?

You sure it was a handbrake imbalance, not a rear brakes imbalance. Not sure a caliper is involved with a rear handbrake on that car, usually handbrake is worked on the inside of a brake disc at the rear of a car, if it has discs on the back that is.?

Some cars will use a caliper with a "winder" type piston for handbrake, and others use a seperate caliper for normal braking with a drum assembly for handbrake, I30 being the latter type(early editions anyway) so brings me to the question of why a caliper would be changed to fix a handbrake that has no connection to it.

Even if it has a separate drum for the handbrake, couldn't a seized caliper still cause a measurable handbrake imbalance if it's applying additional unwanted braking effort while the handbrake test is conducted?

It could for sure, but would have thought it would also show a measurable imbalance on the normal braking test also.

Could you post a pic of the NCT fail sheet OP? Might help clear up the confusion.

Do you know how much a caliper for an i30 costs and how long it takes to replace?

Otherwise how could you know one way or another whether is was cheap or expensive?

The caliper was sticking on the driver's side, he said when you pull the handbrake the driver's side wheel was still able to spin so I guess it was fcked as he put it. I forgot to get the fail sheet back off him. I don't know anything about a separate drum for the hand brake on these cars. He said the mechanism the hand brake cable was pulling on to engage the brakes was stuck beyond repair. There is definitely a brand new caliper on it, I had a good look at it and it looks new to me.

I'm not a mechanic, how would I know ? Thats why I'm asking here.

Hyundai calipers are expensive, your probably looking over €100 just for the caliper. Did the discs need changing?

But you made the statement that it seemed expensive to you? Seems you were leaning towards him having ripped you off, based on no knowledge of what it should cost.

Did he give you a receipt with parts, labour and VAT detailed on it ?

    €119 caliper
    €5 Brake fluid
    €70 labour

Plus VAT on top of that bringing it to €220

The disks were fine, thought maybe he would have put new pads in also for that price. Then I saw he didn't and I brought the €220 into question. I suppose this is the going rate for a caliper on one of these yokes. It's done anyways so I will see how the NCT retest goes on Wednesday.
