Cold start / idle issue

I'm having cold starting / idling issues with my Mazda bongo camper which I can't get to the bottom of.
    It's a 96 2.5td wl-t lump same as in a ford ranger and Mazda b-series pickup truck.

I had a few issues last winter but thought nothing of it as I haven't had any issues for months. With the cold weather yesterday it was much more difficult to start (had to give it some accelerator while turning over for engine to catch) and it kept cutting out when slowing down in traffic. It's an auto so I had to put it into neutral so I could keep the revs up and use the handbrake to slow down (left foot breaking is almost impossible!) or else it would cut out. Once it warmed up it was fine, drove perfectly and started again fine while still warm.

This evening I started it (not as bad as yesterday but still not normal) and let it run for about ten minutes before driving and it was fine but I believe that if I'd driven straight away it would have started cutting out also.

Any idea what could be an issue which seems specifically related to temperature?

Possibly you need to clean the idle air control valve
