    Hi everyone,
Saw a mint condition 2013 320D tourer today, business spec. Not a scratch on it and lovely looking car. Price is 13 k but issue is 160 k miles. I know I know. Full bmw service history but I really tempted by it despite the high mileage. Anything I should be looking out for? Didn’t have time to check it out properly. Seller is reputable dealer. Am I stone mad? Thanks in advance

13k is a bit on the high side. Get it checked over. As long as service intervals are good and its been looked after then no issue. Wouldnt go higher than 11k though

One owner and definitely has full history at regular intervals. Seems it was up and down on motorway Cork to Dublin. Is a bit high but not a chance I will get it for 11k

How much would it cost to import the equivalent from uk?

I agree with you completely. Pity because it’s a beauty but I can’t see him going down that low. I should just walk I know

As above. Look in the North. You will get a similiar or better spec for your 13k budget includibg vrt with a lot less milege

Pay e13,000 for that and I’d love to see what you’d sell it for privately the next day... that’s the engine with the potentially dodgy timing chain issue too

I thought the timing chain issue was from 2011 and below? But ok I’m taking from the replies that I am mad to buy it 😄

Post 2011, Nrs of timing chain's incidences reduced, but not eliminated.

Not mad to buy that car , but probably mad to pay 13 for it ... you’d want to hold onto it for a few years if you buy it as you’ll get sfa for it in a private sale or trade in

Well I’d be hoping to keep it for as long as possible but that’s where the high mileage problem comes in. Don’t want it to be a money drain

I just sold a Laguna Coupe and hated it. Yeah I’d probably need a diesel but that’s mostly for weekend trips around the country, camping hiking etc. Could get away with a petrol I guess. My problem is I’m too impulsive and when I saw it today I wanted it

I get that. Just for that amount of money I’d string advise against the impulse !

Yeah that’s a nice looking car there with a lot less mileage. Think that’s convinced me to walk away and realise that there will be other cars and if I don’t buy this something else will come up. Thanks!

Not exactly a drought of used 3 Series out there so shop around a bit more and see what comes up value wise.

Haha the old me would buy it but the new and improved me will walk away.. probably 😁

At that mileage I would be asking for a timing chain inspection report from BMW. Post 2011 they are not really an issue though and from what I'm told, a lot of the post 2011 fails were on old stock sold in 2012-2013. That said, I would still ask for a report as it will help build a goodwill case should the worst happen in the future.

The only thing I will offer is to service the car a bit sooner than the BMW schedule. My 2013 520d gets serviced every 8000 miles and has served me well as a result, the car is currently just under 145k miles and never had a major issue. IMO the suggested service interval is too long to have oil lubricating the engine, despite what BMW tell you about long life oils.

My mate bought one of these 2 years ago and said it is the best car he’s ever had

Not as fancy as the BMW but similar looking and very reliable motor

Well then just offer him the 11k. If he accepts then you feel you've gotten a bargain. If he declines then you can move on and he can wait for a better offer (or come back to you).

Not actually really, really wanting the car, is the best place to be when you're buying. You can fall in love with it later, but for the time being it helps you make sensible offers.

Different dealer I presume but a number of dealers offered me 13k for my 45000 mile 2014 530d msport and the same for my fiances 45000 mile 2014 A6 S Line so they are taking the piss with asking 13k for a high miler, Lower spec car from the class below. That car you're looking at has a huge automatic and instant depreciation built into it, 6 months time if you decide you don't want it a dealer would be offering you 6 or 7k for that saying they'll never sell it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭U_Fig

I think with the amount on the market it would be best to offer the 11k say or whatever you feel like it's worth and then walk away if it's a no go. You'd be surprised the amount of times I've heard of people getting a call after a few days and the lower or more reasonable offer accepted by the dealer. In a market where supply is high the buyer had the advantage so use it.

exactly this and I said much the same in an earlier post! Go try sell that car the next day or trade it in with a dealer! LOL!

One of the dealers had a 161 Audi A6 on the forecourt asking 28k if I remember correctly. Close to double the mileage of either of my 141 cars and was valuing it at over twice the price. I'm all for dealers making a margin they have to of course but some of it is ridiculous. He did call me back but I'd lost interest at that stage.
