Looking at going to the Algarve around November. We have been before a few years ago - stayed in Albufeira and despite all I've read - We enjoyed it as it wasn't overly busy which suited us.
I've searched the forum and see a few people recommending Quarteira. Im wondering how quiet it would be compared to many of the other resorts? Would most places close down for the winter months? Would there be enough options open between there and Vilamoura at that time of year?

You'll be fine in Vilamoura, golf trips means it's always going to have some level of busy-ness.
I'm just back from a quieter area further West and you could definitely see things winding down. Most places, especially bars and restaurants stay open though.

Hi GBX .... Been to the Algarve plenty of times .
Taking a bit of a chance with weather in November .
You could get lucky with weather in the low 20s but I've been there when it's been only barely hitting 20 and wouldn't go again off season .
I've switched to going to the canaries off season.
The further west you go on the Algarve the quieter it gets .
    I've been to Villamoura / albuierfa/ alvor/ Praia da rocha .
The great thing about the Algarve is no matter where you are staying it's just a short taxi ride to next resort.
I would pick between Villamoura or Praia da rocha if I decided on going to the Algarve .

places like Albufeira close down a lot mid October, cant imagine to do much in November in algarve as weather could be massive hit and miss.

Canaries def worth extra 2 hour flight, as temps depending on island could still be in the mid 20s with little rain. - as cost vise visiting both places this year found canaries more interesting and would say a good bit cheaper.
