I'm thinking of buying a used A4 or A6 Estate in the UK. I do very low mileage so am looking at petrol.

When I search on Autotrader UK there are over 1000 Diesels for each model. For petrol, there are about 300 A4 Avant available but only a handful of A6 Avants. Can someone who knows more about cars tell me why that is?

Same reason as here I'd imagine. The lower tax. You'd also get people commuting for longer distances in the UK.

They put some smaller petrol engines in the A4 too which wouldn't sell in an a6.
There were plenty of 1.6 and 1.8t petrol in A4 over the years and the 1.4 tfsi 8s a seller now too. Never worked in the bigger a6 would need a 2.0 minimum which then becomes an expensive runner.
Same reason as the 520i died until recently too.
The torque of a diesel suits the A6 well too, I have one.

In continental Europe you can still buy VAG cars (Seat, Skoda, VW, Audi) with 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine.
For some reason in UK and Ireland you can get only small petrol engines and bigger diesels.

Diesels are likely more popular due to tax as Dravokivich mentioned mainly as they have lower CO2 emissions (higher other gas emissions though like nitrogen oxide).

Thanks Comhra. Either it is changing or I missed something when I checked it earlier this year as there are 2L petrol engines available.
