Jobs and Convictions

Just want to get peoples opinions here.

I have a possibly conviction in my near future. Because of the nature of my offence I was not allowed to work in the area I was qualified in so sadly had to leave my job.

I have spent months on illness benefit, feeling guilty lining up in the post office. I have now seen a job I would love and it would give me a fresh start.

The application does not ask if you have any convictions. Do I not say it. Or be up front because I will have to go to court in the coming months.

Im in turmoil. What would ye do?

You never know. I wouldn't have left personally but I understand we all do funny things under pressure. Personally I'd say nothing. Get in the door and worry about it if it happens.

If they don't ask, I definitely wouldn't go saying it.

Unfortunately with convictions you’re pretty much munsoned if it goes on a application form or comes up at interview. You could have a chance if it was just a minor offense possibly.

It sounds like you haven't been been tried yet. You should be dealing with a solicitor who might be able to get you a deal or there might be a good technical defece. If a conviction affects your employability, it might be possible to get it dealt with other than by a conviction being recorded.

But I think OP stated it doesnt ask on the app. And Ive never been asked this in an interview. Other than jobs that requite garda vetting Ive only seen the question asked in cash handling type jobs which they would be looking for fraud or theft etc.

Since you havent been convicted yet there is absolutely no need or reason to state anything about it, even if you think you will be convicted you are not convicted till the court case is done and you actually are. For that same reason you didnt have to leave your job, I don't know for sure but dont think being accused means you lose your job.

The court system moves slow here and adjournments are very common, OP. So apply for the job as the case might not go ahead at the court date. If it's the first date they almost never do. It usually takes around a year from the alleged offense for even minor things depending on how long they take to send the summons out.

    I wouldn't volunteer the information.
Depending on the job they might ask if youre successful but cross that bridge when you come to it.
