yeah, to avail of the grant.
    thank you.
why do they say there are grants on cars from 14 - 20 thousand euro when they don't exist or am I missing something?

Which grant are you referring to? Home charge point grant?
Thats available on new and used cars.

If you want to read the fine detail yourself its all on the SEAI website.

    Home charge point: https://www.seai.ie/grants/electric-vehicle-grants/electric-vehicle-home-charger-grant/

    Vehicle grant: https://www.seai.ie/grants/electric-vehicle-grants/grant-amounts/

The reference to 14-20k is because the grant is a sliding scale.

yeah but there are no 14k electric cars (if there was i'd seriously consider getting one) so how can you avail of the 2k grant?
just seems strange to me that they would include them price brackets but then as I said, maybe i'm missing something.

Twizy there for 6k, Fluence for 5k

    Terrible examples!

Both horrendously overpriced and both are subject to monthly battery lease payments (until you scrap the car) and neither can fast charge.

Cheapest good value EVs on the market are the Mitsubishi iMiev (from about €5k) and the Nissan Leaf (from about €6k). Both can fast charge. Neither have battery lease.

I think you might be under the impression that the grant is available on secondhand cars? It’s not.

That grant is only applied to new cars you buy from SIMI dealers only.

Nearly all EVs are €20k+ when new.
Any EV <€20k isn’t really a “car” unless you want to consider something like the Twizy!

So you want to know what’s the cheapest new EV available today?
    Does range matter?

i would love to get one but the prices i'm seeing are way out of my league. I thought there might be some for around 15k seeing as the govt are giving 2k grants but that doesn't appear to be the case.
    range wouldn't matter.

You won’t get a new EV for 15k. Not many ICE for that price either with anywhere near the same spec.

Government are not giving 2k grants either. You need to do more homework.

Would you consider a second hand car?

€5999 from a dealer, so with warranty. You'd get a couple hundred off if you show up with a brown envelope full of cash.

    Linky

Get the €600 subsidy for a home charger too.

maybe, but taking the 2011 leaf in the link provided as an example, would the technology not have moved on a lot since then and will continue to do so?
    that would be my concern.

As with every other item you'll buy today.
    Phone
    petrol / diesel cars
    technology in general.

Keep thinking like that and you'll never buy anything.

The technology is not really changing that much. What is changing is the size of the batteries and hence longer range. To get that you have to buy newer and hence more money so its all a balancing act. EV range is going to be increasing for years to come. Its not like the market is going to settle in the next couple of years.

So, you have to decide if the current range is sufficient for you or not.

If it is then go for it at a price point you can bear.
If it's not, then you have to wait.
