    Hi,

My cat is 10 and she has FIV - we have just found out. She has had a problem with her eye and we have treated it with antibiotics/ steroids etc. She now seems fine with it but is blind in one eye now we think. The vet is now talking about removal of the eye. has anyone had this done and how has the cat done and any idea of rough cost. I am loathe to put her through this and also I am worried about the cost. She seems fine at the moment - v happy but the vet says it will get worse and then we will have to consider removal. Any advice would be appreciated. She is a loved pet but we don't have pet insurance.

Can't comment on cost but have had multiple rescues who've had to remove eyes due to infections etc. They will sew the skin over it to avoid it getting infected and will need to wear a cone for a week or so to let it heal but beyond some depth perception issues (i.e. problem hitting a ball in front of them or defending themselves in a cat fight paw to paw) they were all fine.

They recover super-well. :) Just a bit gruesome to look at for the owner while stitches are in and the area around the eye will be shaved - just to prepare you for that.

Ask the vet for an itemised estimated bill; consultation, sedation, proceedure etc. Call them up and ask for it to be emailed if you have access. Or have them prepare it and call you back. Im sure you could reach an agreement where you pay weekly.
Though it may not be as big as you fear.

The vet should have NO problem giving you an 'quote' as to the cost of the surgery, so definitely do ask this question to help you decide.
There may be a problem with the eye to cause the surgery to become necessary
Its amazing how quickly animals can adapt to amputations.

That's great - thanks for your replies.....I have got a couple of quotes from vets and it is around the €300 to €500 mark - so it could be worse. She is managing ok at the moment but I think it will have to be done in the future and just wanted peoples' opinions.

Work in veterinary... albeit down the country. €300 is the max. you should be paying and at that, it's a little on the steep side.

Thanks for that - nice to have an idea
