Water pump Golf - any insights?

    Hi

We have a 1.2l Golf TSI, 2013, 118K on the clock.

About 2 months ago, coolant warning light came on. Stopped the car and checked- there was almost nothing in there.

Topped up and kept a good eye on things. It dropped twice (about half an inch) over the next month.

Brought it to the VW garage who said it was a coolant pump leak at a cost of 600+ to fix.

Brought it to an independent garage who examined it thoroughly and could find no leak, but couldn't provide an idea of where the coolant went.

No other ominous symptoms like milky oil, power loss, overheating, strange sounds etc.

    Has anyone experienced this before?

    Thanks

What did they do to not find a leak?

    Pressure test ?

    Dye test ?

    magic thoughts ?

If your not dropping coolant on the driveway it's going somewhere. As in head gasket or out the water pump.

Thanks! The independent guy said they did a visual inspection. If it was going out the water pump, would there be no puddle?

Unless they used dye then that's a bit waffley. You can't test properly by looking at it. The engine would have to be up to temperature and under pressure.

Cool thanks. VW are adamant theres a leak so we will just get it fixed with them. Independent guy claimed VW were just looking for work..

Sounds like the independent isn't looking hard enough for work.

You've told him the car is losing coolant. He said he cant find it. So either he's not very good at his job or you are imagining things, which do you reckon?

They are very fond of a water pump, so it seems plausible that that's what it needs.

€600 is very expensive for that job, even at a dealer. Would you not ask them to do their special offer timing belt and water pump for €449 deal?

Thanks! Went back to VW and asked about cheaper rate. It’s a different type of water pump apparently, not a standard one that comes with timing belt. It’s on the opposite side of the engine to the belt and thermostat also needs to be changed.
