I'm going through my cv to gather as many outside ref's as I can( inter departmental ref's are not acceptable for this purpose)

Anyone I've contacted can only offer me a 'statement of service', which isn't really the same thing or what the panel are looking for.

Is this a thing now, even in the private sector? is noone giving out actual references anymore?

It's been like that for a while in a lot of places. Even the Civil Service know they have to take a statement of service and then make a sneaky call to a line manager, with the employees consent of course.

All to do with legal issues and potential libelous situations.
If you give a bad reference you could be potentially be sued for libel.

And sued for a good reference too.

I had just changed job when that rule came in,
So why ask for them, if /when they cant be followed up on?

I suppose just to confirm that you did actually work where you have stated on your CV.

Otherwise you could say that you were the CEO of McDonalds...

I have had in the past been asked for a copy of my last company work contract to prove I worked there.
