This is the longest stage of the race, and the longest stage since the 2013 Vuelta. There are no categorised climbs today, but there is still 2,395 m of elevation gain.

Okay today should be a fairly boring stage... albeit with Sam having a great chance to win it. But I've started a thread because a massive breakaway group are 2 minutes ahead of the peloton and there are some interesting riders in it.
Nairo Quintana (sixth overall at 7:43), Wilco Kelderman (eighth at 10:34), Hermann Pernsteiner (tenth at 12:05) and James Knox (11th at 13:26), there are a handful of riders looking to jump up on GC.

There are stage hunters such as Dylan Teuns, Luis León Sánchez, Rémi Cavagna, Philippe Gilbert, Thomas De Gendt, though everyone will be intersted in a win if they can get it, obviously.

And, along with the large number of domestiques out there, the group includes a number of climbers (Esteban Chaves, Pierre Latour, Wout Poels, Tao Geoghegan Hart) and sprinters (Sam Bennett, Fabio Jakobsen, Nikias Arndt, John Degenkolb, Edvald Boasson Hagen).

    Whats going on there? Wind?

Could hurt Jumbo Visma if they are left to try and bring that back on their own and if the break is working cohesively. The sprinters teams won't help as their men are up the road.

according to Daniel Friebe on yeaterdays podcast todays stage doesnt go below 700 meters in altitude

    Gap is 4 minutes now.

If the break decide to work together they could gain a huge amount of time. Decuininck have 7 of their 8 riders in the breakway! Sunweb have 5!

Not sure Sam is in there...
Bora pulling the peleton but maybe that's for Majka.
Crap highlights on ES at the moment of course.

Sorry looks like he is! Some boy!

According to the Vuelta app, he is in there alright.

Another ambush stage at the Vuelta!

Typical late Vuelta broadcast time means there are no pictures. Same as 2012 and 2016 when Contador instigated the attacks.

This is the kind of stage we need to see from the start

Not really the multiple mountains stages where everyone takes it easy after the usual break goes ...until the final climb

Love to see Nairo back int he game ...DQuickstep will ride fro Knox so a good chance break stays away

15 have been dropped from the break, gap 4:30 they're moving and shedding the dead wood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭EC1000

There are now more riders in the front group than Roglic's group so cant see them making much inroads with 7 from QS working at the front along with others.

Didn't know that. Sounds like carnage. Could be a case of who's less bolloxed after this stage as we head towards the end of the race.

Kelderman takes 2" at the intermediate sprint
    14:10
    1. Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), 4 pts, 3”
    2. Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb), 2 pts, 2”
    3. Owain Doull (Team Ineos), 1 pt, 1”

Sam is definitely in the break

Quintana now virtual second on GC.

How do 15 riders get dropped from a break like that?! Echelons? Great to see stages like this, everything in the mix.

If QS are doing all the work for GC then maybe Sam has a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

Difficult situation for Sam now... The QS guys will start jumping off the front later on and he's got nobody to chase them down. Jackobsen will sit on his wheel in case it comes to a sprint. How did Sam make the split but not one other team member?

30 in teh break and 30 in the red group. over 5:30 of a gap now 90km to go

On the train from Madrid to Guadalajara at the moment. the Eurosport player is eating all my data:mad:, have to find a low quality dodgy stream.
    Sounds absolutely mad out there.

Jakobsen gone so all Sam has to do is stick with Gilbert and co., no bother.

Movistar boys on the red jersey group are going hell for leather, weird with Quintana 5 minutes up the road

Apparently they are trying to drop the domestiques on the uphill that are doing all the chasing.

Edit@ Seems to be working - split to pieces now!

Makes sense, domestiques are wrecked - kill them on the hill and then the domestiques are stuck behind trying to catch Roglic who might have to work himself. Ha , Seán just said it.

I think they are trying to ensure their 4th and 5th places on the overall are secure, would be another fantastic achievement after they got three in the top 10 on the TDF.

36km to go, the pace is unreal.

Movistar tactics make no sense as other riders dropping back to chase

With 4 big climbs tomorrow, all the GC lads will be wrecked after this 😊. Another good day tomorrow so to look forward to...

I also think that when Jacobsen got dropped in the front group, it was kind of being left to all the moviestar guys to make the pace. So that move behind also sent out the massage that we'll bring ye back unless ye start to work. And I now notice that they are. I don't think what they did is making any difference to roglic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Around 50 km/h average so far... crazy!

Well, they've dropped Roglics domestiques! Now Astana are on the rack which might be exploited later. Meanwhile Movistars lads can sit in and chill until they try to escape in the last kms. The last 10kms should be great for action too.

That is not a tactic as they took almost a minute out of Quintana, tired their guys out up front and in peloton (no sitting and chilling anywhere) and there were enough Astana and others to drop back

That was a valverde move and dreadful tactics if they want Quintana on the podium

Why is the BORA lad helping Astana in the chasing group?

Short term pain for long term gain. It's 5 Astana lads against 20+ escapees for Quintana. Now Roglic is under pressure to ride and Valverde + domestique or two will try to escape and take more time.

Sorry ..dont agree with any of that ..Roglic has been under no pressure and neither has Pogacar ..Astan have seen to that

The 5 Astana lads are fresher than the 20 up front who are riding all day

Anyway you look at it dreadful Movistar treatment of Quintana
    And all for Valverde's podium
