I think Honda tried their best with the latest 2 marks to change that, but not sure if they succeeded!

I like to think of myself more of boy racer than old man, but perhaps I'm only codding myself.:D

What I wanted to say is that in Croatia barely anyone thinks of them as a boy racer car. If it had that kind of reputation I probably wouldn't buy one

Also, Civics in Croatia are really cheap to insure as they are rarely involved in serious accidents. I guess only civilised people buy them? :D It is called a Civic after all :P

For me, the best thing about the civic 8, other than reliability that you get with Honda, are the "magic seats" and the huge ass trunk that once, albeit with folded back seats, fit a whole washing machine (with packaging) and one other time a whole living room of furniture from IKEA :D

TLDR - I couldn't care less about its high rpm's, the only thing that's worn out in mine is the cruise control button on the steering wheel :D

yup, mine 9 years in and never ever a single thing wrong with it :D

I have high hopes for the next car, tesla model 3, as after 9 years in a Honda the reliability expectation bar has been set pretty damn high! I am worried just a bit that the model 3 has more of a Alfa Romeo reputation quality wise, but hey, fingers crossed and software updates ftw :D

Be careful you don't leave your window open when charging. Someone might plug in their granny charger for some "free" electrons.

It's an excellent feature. You could easily run all the essentials in your house off that for several days should the grid go down, even with a tiny battery like in the Honda

Also great for camping, just connect full size microwave, travel kettle, hair dryer, air pump, etc.

The one I built into my car is only 600W though, not enough for anyone to steal my electrons to charge their EV with :p

We'll just have to send the home built e-bikes your way!

  • Registered Users Posts: 63,621 ✭✭✭✭unkel

You can all come and charge your eBikes for free in my gaff if you like :D

My own most powerful bike costs 3c to charge empty to full on the night rate. And charge during the day, even on a dull day and it will be completely free and powered from my solar PV.

But yeah, one of the main reasons behind installing the inverter in the car is to be able to charge up one battery pack while I'm out on the bike using my other battery pack.

Will it be a 3 pin in Ireland/Uk?

  • Registered Users Posts: 63,621 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I was wondering that myself. But surely it would have to be to comply with the local standards, so yes a UK socket on these isles?

Now somebody will come on and say: just use an adapter. Which is fine, but not if you plan to draw 1.5kW through that socket for prolonged periods of time. That would be a bad idea.

Had a Schuko to a square 3 pin adapter beside me on the desk, its actually rated for 7.5 amps. which actually surprised me, also looks like it tries to pass the ground through too.

Id be surprised to see it in the UK irelnad spec, but if it does it would need to have the proper socket.

1000km takes 16 hours - the slowest of all EVs for sale today, even worse than a Nissan Leaf :D

I guess it's fair to say that most owners will rarely / never do anything like 1000km in this car though...

  • Registered Users Posts: 48 elektrik

That was painful to watch, poor Bjorn.

So even if you plan to use it 99% in the city this still only makes sense as a second car.
I would feel sorry for anyone buying this as their only transport option. Hopefully second gen will do better

  • Registered Users Posts: 63,621 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yeah, my car slow charges on an AC charger at about the same speed as that Honda fast charges on a DC charger :p

At least Nyland makes good use of the 1500W AC outlet in the car, heating up all his food with the microwave he brought. I bought a microwave oven myself for my car, but haven't tried it yet :)

No sane person is going to buy a 30 kWh car, unless s/h. That ship has sailed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 63,621 ✭✭✭✭unkel

It's a city car, not suitable for long distance travelling. Which would be fine for most users. Great wee car for €20k, funky and super practical - see that turning circle? Not so much at the ridiculous expected price of about €30k after incentives...

It's a snazzy option for someone with cash to spare on the looks/features.
If no cash to spare then a used 162/171 L30 much better value.

average buyer probably wouldnt know about this stuff and will buy it for the wife etc. not having a clue about the throttling

I find many EVs to be very good looking, but sorry, this isn't one of them. I'm just not seeing the beauty.

It reminds me of a somewhat updated one of these.

It seems a lot of others do like it though.

Pretty sure a 40 kwh Leaf would be even worse.

Bjorn's original rapidgate winter test in 2018 took AGEs.

And Jonathan Porterfields original infamous race to Aberdeen in an L40 took 15.5 hours. That was only 450 miles.

Someone on Speak EV took 21 hours to do his regular 640 mile trip from the Highlands in Scotland to the.South of England.

So yeah I think an L40 would be worse myself.

    Edit

Especially as Honda's version of rapidgate still gives you fairly normal speed at the start but just throttles earlier.

It is starting to look like a big missed opportunity:

When 1st revealed as a concept almost 2 years ago, everyone was buzzing about its looks and potential. It looked like a proper old school hot hatch with Honda's pedigree and the power of an electric engine behind it. The size of the wheels, the sharp styling, the mad interior and external design features. At a time when there was such limited electric options.

Now, as Lumens post a few pages back show, it's overpriced, overweight, underpowered, short ranged and has been cutified away from the sharp design promised to now look like a cheap Fiat 500 knockoff. Yes the interior is still cool, but I just don't see how people think the current exterior looks cool or in any way quirky.

Also in the meantime you've the Mini electric for its handling, Peugeot 208 e-GT for hot hatch looks, e-corsa and Zoe for cheap(er) city cars.

So until the r-type Honda e emerges with it's original looks restored, it's a big pass for me

In the "TBTP" 1000km challenge the rapidgate leaf was faster than this - but still awful

    That was the 62 though.

The 40 will be even worse.

    Spotted this this evening

Looks good in the flesh, nice to see some of the concept car stuff like cameras instead of door mirrors make it to production.

One of my neighbours works for a Honda dealership, its on GB plates, could be the first one in the country for the dealers to get a look at.
