Could anyone clarify please ..does a baby get a PPS number when registering the birth in the office before the 3 months ..? My son s paperwork was supposed to be taken over by my husband as I was very I'll.
I need his pls number but my husband says he never claimed for his children's allowance. So now I'm worried and confused.
Where do i start ..I'm nervous starting a conversation with social welfare.
How do i get his pps number..he is almost 2now!
I feel like I've let my son down .
I just need to know where to start and the steps.
Thanks. to anyone who can advise me.

The PPSN is issued when the birth is registered.

You need to walk into the local SW office with your child’s birth certificate and photo ID for yourself (passport or drivers licence) and proof of your address (utility bill, bank statement, official letter addressed to you) and ask for your child’s PPSN.

You need to do what I advised.
If your child was born in an Irish hospital then he was given a PPSN. It came in the post. Child Benefit sent a form when he was around 6-8 weeks to your home address for you to sign and return.
Sort it out tomorrow in the local SW office.

From my conversation with my husband he said he thought this was enough but I'm sure from reading we should have registered officially with gro. Is there a form I should fill.. although I read elsewhere that to child allowance I should have pps number to apply for that? I'm freaking out that my child is not registered at all !!😓😓

The pps number should have automatically came in the post a week or so after registering the birth

There’s no point in freaking out at 9.15 at night. Your local office will be open in the morning.

He has been unwell lately and I was told to get the under 6 gp card ,I thought my husband had registered him with our doc but found out he was not.
I'm just angry with myself for not following up on this but my health had been troublesome so much I didn't even think . I was sure my husband had looked after all of this. He said he did.

My husband is now telling me that when we got his birth cert at the register for births .. he was told to ring another place to register before the 3 months went over. He said he didn't do that. He forgot. I don't think my child is registered properly

Your baby is 2 and since he was born hes been living in Ireland with you but he’s never needed the doctor never needed a prescription and he’s not had his vaccinations and you haven’t had any child benefit.

He has got his vaccinations up to date so far I've his book. He was unwell when younger in hospital. I never got asked for pps number.

How did your husband get the children’s allowance? Children’s allowance is paid to the mother of the child in Ireland unless the mother is dead.
If any children’s allowance was applied for you would have had to sign the form .

He never told me about child benefit , he says he kept meaning to apply but with a lot of problems in our lives over the few years he kept leaving it to last as he felt overwhelmed. I was sure he was saving it for him

He couldn’t have applied for child benefit unless you were dead or very seriously ill in hospital and medically certified as unable to apply.

My health is a different matter. As I said I'm confused as of what to do now. There is nothing weird here. I don't want to have to explain my health issues. This is just my problem now which I need to fix.

Your child benefit will be back dated if you never received it. Apply to Welfare and get the child’s PPS sorted. It’s not difficult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,514 ✭✭✭bee06

I think you've confused people with some of your posts. I’m I correct in saying:
You have a birth certificate for your son? If so, he’s registered.

You aren’t claiming child benefit (though you were but your husband didn’t sort it)? This is an extra step to register with social welfare after registering the birth.

No GP card. As above, this needs to be applied for separately to the above.

Best thing to do is to take a deep breath, go to sleep and go into the social welfare office tomorrow to discuss with them.

I probably am confusing. I'm just in a tizzy and over tired.
Yes i have a birth cert.
I did think my husband was saving it from my account he had access to it with my agreement.
I claim for my older son and my husband puts that money in his account.
All I want to know is if he is registered.. and we have the birth cert .. so all I want to know is if I can get his pps number easily. I can sort the rest. Thank you

You can get your son's PPS number by phoning the Department of Social Protection on LoCall 1890 927 999 or by emailing cis@welfare.ie

Once you have that, plus your own PPS number, you can register for the Under 6 GP card online HERE

You need to claify with Child Benefit section if any application was made for your son. They can be contacted via the same phone number as above, just ask for Child Benefit Section.

A word of advice, don't call a 1890 number from a mobile phone, use a landline. If you only have a mobile and have free minutes, you can use their landline numbers for free - (074) 916 4496 is the number for child benefit.

    Not quite:-
    "Time for Claiming
Child Benefit must be claimed within 12 months of:

the date in which the child was born, or
the date the child became a member of the family or
the date the child/family came to reside in Ireland.

When the claim is made within this time period, Child Benefit will be paid from the first day of the month after the child is born or becomes a member of the family or after the family takes up residence in Ireland.

    Late Claims

If a claim is made late, it is paid from the first day of the month after the claim is received. Claims can be backdated if the Deciding Officer is satisfied that there was good cause for the delay in making the claim.

OP - in addition to the CB Application Form you will need to send in a written request asking for the CB to be backdated and explaining why you didn't apply for it sooner.

It will be backdated once Child Benefit are satisfied with the explanation of what’s been going on for the last two years, tbh.
If it’s already been paid out and hubbys spent it then that’s nothing to do with CB.

I think the OP can use the valid excuse of her own health as to why she never followed up.

Keep calm when discussing it with the office and things will get sorted.

It looks now as if the child benefit was paid out but the OP doesn’t know what happened to it.

Don’t see how that could happen. It’s only paid into the mother’s account. Something is strange with this post

It looks as if she is terribly stressed tonight. She seems to be conceding now that she did get the child benefit but her husband has access to it while she was very ill.
He said he was saving it, but can’t account for it now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 818 ✭✭✭Hal3000

If it’s been paid into an account then it’s doubtful l she’ll get anything back. It’s not up to Welfare to monitor child benefit spends. Go and see them tomorrow and hopefully you can get all this resolved going forward.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and helpful responses. I feel more relieved in knowing where and who to turn to. Especially since time has past so much on this issue.
Be rest assured my husband did not spend it, I have seen all the accounts today as proof of our situation. There has been a lot of upheaval to mention over a few years which had been a distraction. Hopefully tomorrow I can get this issue sorted for my son . We both feel awful as it is. I just needed to feel clarity and thank you to all for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,420 ✭✭✭splinter65

Taylor your story is changing with every post. Don’t worry about it just go to bed and get some rest and SW will confirm tomorrow that your child has a PPSN and there’s no further “registering” of your child needed.

You say you are already claiming child ben for an older child? Correct me if im wrong but doesnt it then jsut get automatically paid for further children once their births are registered?
I know on my first we signed a formabout 2 weeks post birth that arrived in the post, on the second we did nothing and the mont afterhe was born i automatically collected an extra payment in the PO
