I've a 2004 Mazda MX5 that failed the NCT yesterday due the front passenger side structural bodywork being completely corroded. Needs to be cut out and welded by someone who really knows what they're doing.

I rarely drive the thing so I'm thinking of cutting my losses on it. Any ideas on what to do with it? Had to leave it parked at the NCT centre!

Any competent mechanic/body shop could do the job. It’s not unusual and doesn’t require someone specialized to do it. Just get a quote to get the work done and decide if it’s worth doing then.

Yeah, they are well known for getting rusty like that. That said, a welded repair isn't anything too specialised. If you could get it done for €2-300 and get another year out of the car you'd probably be winning.

The flip side of the is once you start seeing rust on those it's usually a never ending battle, so I'd be getting it patched up this year with view to it being the last year and then you have a nice bit of time to shop around for a replacement.

Had the same with an Accord of a similar vintage, corrosion under passenger seat needing welding. Brought it to a couple of garages I've used before but they reckoned there would be too much work involved requiring removal of passenger seat and rerouting cables even before welding.
Labour would have been more than the car was worth, not to mention there were other areas needing attention that must have just passed.
You might be lucky, no harm in getting a quote, could be a simple weld.
If you're in Dublin Crofton motors in Kimmage are good for that kind of repair but even they baulked at my repair!

Cheers for the responses folks. There's a body shop near the NCT centre so I'm going to get it towed there on my insurance policy. If it isn't too expensive I'll get the work done, otherwise I'll have to get it to a breaker.
