Will they have to go via London or will they send a Aerlingus A330 to Japan with the team?

They usually do 2 flights for long haul. Summer tours to the SH usually involve a connection in the UAE. Business Class capacity is a big issue.

Kilcoyne said after the match on Saturday that he was looking forward to the flight on Wednesday and hopes that “Japan Airways” do a nice steak and glass of vino in business class.

I reckon EI and JAL via where I’m not sure.

Any way of doing a charter I wonder? There are a few long haul BBJs & ACJ out there.

About $15-20k an hour for a BBJ and then restricted to about 15 seats.

To add to this, from memory for Australia last year they travelled in two batches because of the business class capacity issue. It's a genuine issue for sports teams with competitive fixtures with a few days. Don't know why Ireland left it so late, England and France are there already, though I know they didn't play on Saturday.

I was on a flight from SA last year and a team was returning from fixtures down there. There wasn't enough capacity in J and I felt so sorry for the giants who had to sit in economy for all those hours and then play a huge game 5 days after getting home.

The Aussies had to change their flights because of the typhoon! I suspect that England and France may have had bumpy flights!

Five days recovery time is four days longer than I've ever had after returning from a long haul trip in cattle class. Just a thought.

Absolutely but you weren't playing Toulon in a Heineken Cup semi final!

But maybe he’s still a giant?

I wouldn't call myself a giant, but I'm large enough that flying in anything less than Premium Economy is an endurance.

I guess what I was trying to say is that I have no more sympathy for well-paid sports stars in economy than I do for any other traveller forced to travel long haul in the cheap seats. If they had five days to recover after doing so, then I'd have thought that more than enough. In fact, I'd suggest that they're probably in better physical shape than the average office grunt – and as such they should be able to recover more quickly than us mere mortals :)

Wasn't it Keith Wood whose neck (yes - he has a neck!) was in such a bad way after a long-haul flight from Siberia that he was crocked for weeks?

This is starting to sound like a possible sideline opportunity in the airline market. Charter planes with all comfy seats for sports teams.

Been done. Cello had all US-domestic-first style aircraft in the UK based charter market and plenty of US operators have done it too. Not sure if anyone does currently - it makes the planes less valuable for other flights!

The Ryanair 737-700 is configured in all business class exactly for this reason.

Delta have their own fleet in the US using primarily 757s for transporting the Major League teams.

That's a scheduled service; as is the premium-eco and biz only A350 for Singapore - don't think there's any downtime in the schedules to charter either out.

They're all a bit small for a full squad except I'd imagine the 777 but they don't say what it has!

You want 40 seats or so really.

Assuming Japan Airlines from LHR the aircraft have the following no. of seats in Business Class

    777-300 - 49
    777-200 - 26
    787-9 - 28
    787-8 - 58

If everything is planned to suit the athletes you would have to assume the 787-8 for a quicker recovery from jetlag etc....

This is only a guide to whats on the JAL website.

EDIT: according to another thread they will be on JAL44 which according to flightaware is a 777-300

Why would you want that. Part of the fun of being up the front is knowing that others are stuck in the back :)

Ryanair got this aircraft for a firesale price and it is used to transport executive staff and engineers and pilots to retrieve broken down aircraft. It has also been used for occasional flights where a full size 737-800 isnt needed.

It’s also done a good few football teams and private chartering out of Ireland and the UK. It very very very rarely shuttles staff or engineers around, the Lear jets are used for that and scheduled flights when appropriate.

It's also used for training. It's regularly in Shannon doing touch and goes.
