City moss dark colour? Pollution or just a type of moss?

I have noticed that the moss you see in the city in north facing walls or shady gardens is darker than the moss you would find in a forest Is that because it is a different type of moss? Or is it because the moss absorbs the city pollution or dirt? Thanks
