New car...petrol today?

I am looking to replace my car, and....

I do low mileage (about 5k miles per year), mainly weeked use but at least once a month long trips to the middle of nowhere.

-Electric will not be practical due to the usage, with the current range and charging time
-Hybrid is an option although the save would not be big given the low mileage I do
-The models I really like (Peugeot Rifter / New Berlingo, I know, not everyone's cup of tea) only comes in petrol or diesel. Diesel does not feel a smart option in the current environment, and petrol does not feel to smart either.
-I am considering waiting for the Gov budget in October and decide then. My concern is that the ownership cost of diesel/petrol my increase significantly.

    Thoughts?

Why not buy before the new WLTP comes in?

Rifter/Berlingo new would be under eur30k, but the question is more about fuel type.

I don't think it is an option for those models as they are new from this year?

If your trips are mainly longish and you’re not paying much of a premium for a diesel, then it might still make sense to get one.

Buying any new car to only do 5k a year seems a bit silly, but if you’re keeping it long term then sure why not. If keeping long term, then resale shouldn’t be a big concern.

Rifter and Berlingo are very similar with same engines. 1.2 petrol is ptrobably best in range unless you will be loading up or going 7 seater..

At your mileage petrol would be much better option.

Wouldn't worry about fuel. The entire world uses that same fuel.

    Thanks guys, this helps.

I suppose my concern is the announcement of a sharp increase in motor tax for petrol cars and petrol in the next govt budget.

    Not gonna happen.

Wouldn't worry. We all need a car. Diesel tax 'may' may see some uplift on older cars. The consumer is dumping diesel anyway despite zero change to legislation, tax or insurance on the basis or nothing more than rumours.

Don't expect any significant change. Just buy what's right for you.

Would you be buying brand new?

Ideally not, but the Rifter is a new model...for me cars are just a tool so whatever works out best when I put together value, practicality and reliability.

My current car serves me well, but it is slowly showing its age and I know that once it starts giving me hassle I will make the move.
