Bugatti Chiron goes 304mph/490kph to set hypercar record

Now the company has revealed the spectacular answer, with a slightly modified car smashing both the production car speed record and the 300mph barrier.

The Chiron’s “near production” spec included an additional safety cell, aerodynamic changes and a taller seventh gear, as well as a 1578bhp version of Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged 8-litre W16 engine taken from up from the 1479bhp of the ‘standard’ car.

Seems a bit confusing if it's a production car record given the above, but even if not, that's faster than a Le Mans car or Indy car (and well faster than F1) - I can't think of any other car (competition or not) that goes as fast while also being able to go round corners?

Koenigsegg will have that record back soon enough, they were already close on a closed public road.

Still, Bugatti will always have the first to 300mph title.

Koenigsegg will try to hit 500 Km/h, possibly the last barrier that production cars will achieve, I honestly do not see a production car ever hitting 600 Km/h, let alone 400 mph.

Amazing feat, though it's been heavily modified and impossible in standard guise. You just have to tip your hat to the engineers, drivers and project managers behind that.

    (video is a bit lame :o )

Plus the fact VW are being petty and not letting Koenigsegg use the test track :)
Koenigsegg hit their record on an 11 mile stretch of highway in Texas.

Probably still salty from a random Agera RS owner beating their 0-400km/h-0 time for the craic ha.

Sorry for posting as "new" news, I did not realize it was done a month ago now (not being well up on stuff I can't afford!!!).

    Interesting wiki page here

I'd call those major modifications. Hang on hun, I'll be with you in a sec; just need to pull the engine and gearbox and swap in a taller top gear.

On 2 August 2019, Andy Wallace achieved a maximum of 490.48 km/h (304.77 mph) in a modified Chiron prototype at Ehra-Lessien, which was verified by TÜV. The Chiron is described by Bugatti a "near production ready prototype". Ineligible for this list due it being a prototype and different from the production car.

    Interesting
